RETTA R. .QUAOKENBUSI'I, OF \VATERTOIVN, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLOTHES-LINE ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,896, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed June 22, 1896. Serial'No. 596,539. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BETTA R. QUAoKEm BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth es-Lin'e Adjusters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to means for carryin g clothes-lines across spaces intervening between two connecting-points, being especially adapted for use in cities, where it is necessary to adjust clothes-lines from an upper-story window to an opposite wall.
With this object in View my invention consists of a telescopic conveyer whereby a line having a pulley-block by the opening out of said device may be carried to an opposite connecting-point and the pulley-block there secured to an engaging device.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this application, Figure 1 is a View showing my improved clothes-line adjuster extended. Fig. 2 is a View, in longitudinal section, partly broken away; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device closed up.
A indicates my telescopic device, which is formed of the tubes at c d e f, all of said tubes being of different diameters and arranged to close one into the other in the manner of a telescope. The said tubes are provided with means, as the outwardly-flared flanges f and the inwardly-turned flanges g, preventing each tube from being separated from its adj acent tube when extended and forming stops to limit their outward movement. The outermost tube-section a is provided on its outer side with the cleat h h, upon which the cord i may be wound when not in use. The rear end of said tube a is fitted with a cap j, having opening j, through which the cord 1' may be passed.
A pulley-block 7t may carry the clothes-line, which is passed through the telescopic tubes, and said pulley-block may be connected by its eye Z to a hook m upon an opposite wall.
The device when not in use is closed up, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the cord may be wound upon the lugs h h. To operate it, the innermost tube, as f, is pulled out by its flange n and the other tubes then extended in due order until a sufficient length has been attained, enabling the block it, which is held at the mouth of the tube f by the tension of the clothes-line and which carries the line, to be connected to an opposite wall, as m. The tubes may then be closed up again and the clothes-line is free to be employed.
I am aware that modified forms of construction may be employed embodying the same principle of invention herein set forth, and therefore I do not wish to limit myself to the exact parts shown; but,
Having described a practical form of my invention, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clothes-line carrying and adjusting device comprising a series of telescoping tubes provided with stops, a handle anda cleat secured to the largest of said sections, and a cap pivoted to and adapted to close the end of said largest section, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, 1896.
