SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,864, dated April 20, 1897.

Be it known that I, LLEWELLYN GRANT IIOUSER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oneida, in the county of Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- VVells, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.

This invention relates to ink-wells 5 and the object thereof is to provide au improved device of this class which is designed to be set into or secured to a desk, table, or similar article, a further object being to provide an inkwell of this class which is detachably mounted in a suitable casing which is adapted to be secured to or set into a desk, table, or other article, said casing being provided with a movable cover for the ink-well.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is aplan view of myimproved inkwell, showing the same connected with a desk or other article; Fig. 2, alongitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2'of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing a bottom casing or covering which is not shown in said Fig. 2.

In the drawings forming part of this speciication I have shown at 5 a part of a' desk, table, or other article of furniture, and in the practice of my invention I provide an inkwell 6, Whichis cylindrical in form, and in the top of which is formed an opening 7, and

. the well 6 is provided at its ends and at the lower side thereof with triangular notches or recesses 8. I also provide a casing which consists of circular end pieces 9, each of which is provided with a projecting plate l0, by which it is secured to the desk or table, and these end pieces are placed vertically at the ends of a suitable opening 13, formed in said desk or table, and each end piece is provided near its lower end with inwardly-directed triangular lu gs or projections 14, which are adapted to enter the notches or recesses 8 in the ends of the ink-well, said triangular lugs Serial No. 607,898. It will be understood that the ink-well G is supported by the lugs orp1'ojections14,which enter the triangular notches or recesses 8 when the ink-well is placed in position, and each of said end pieces 9 is provided with a circular groove l5, which is formed in the inner side and near the perimeter thereof, and mounted in said circular groove is a cover 17, which is semicircular in cross-section, and which is provided at one side with a lug or projection 1S, which limits the movement thereof in either direction, and by means of which said cover may be turned, as will be readily understood.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

The inkwell 6 is considerably smaller in its transverse diameter than the end pieces 9, and when said end pieces are secured in place the ink-well G is dropped into position, and said ink-well may be removed for cleaning purposes whenever desired.

The cover 17 is designed to protect the inkwell when the latter is notvin use and to prevent dust and dirt from entering through the opening 7, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the obj ect of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive.

I have also shown in Fig. 3 a casing 20, which is secured to the bottom of the desk, table, or other article with which my improved ink-well is connected, and the object of which is to exclude all dust and dirt as much as possible therefrom, and when the movable cover 17 is in the closed position and the casing 20 employed it will be apparent that there will be but slight circulation of air within the space occupied by the ink well or bottle 6, and consequently there will be but little evaporation of the ink, and comparatively little dust or dirt can enter the bottle or well.

My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof as herein shown and IOO described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come Within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a desk, table or other article of furniture, which is provided With aJ suitable opening, of a casing mounted in said opening, and comprising two end pieces, in the inner surfaces of which are formed annuler grooves, a detachable ink- Well mounted in said casing, and a revoluble cover for said Well, Which is mounted in said annular grooves, said end pieces and the ink- Well being provided With means for supporting the ink-Well between said end pieces, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with a desk, table or other article of furniture, which is provided with t suitable opening, of a casing mounted in said opening, and comprising two end pieces, in the inner surfaces of which are formed annuler grooves, e detachable ink- Well mounted in said casing, and zt revoluble cover for said Well, which is mounted in said annuiztrgrooves, sa-id end pieces and the ends and the ink-Well being provided With means for supporting the ink-Well between said end pieces, and said cover being circular in crosssection, and the ink-well being cylindrical in form, substantially as shown and described.
