Description

PATENT OFFIcJE.
CHARLES E. DAMON, OF READING, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO MARCH BROTHERS, PIERCE & CO., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 580,772, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed January 25, 1897. Serial No. 620,660. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DAMON, of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of lllassachusetts'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to neckties such as are worn by ladies in connection with standing collars, and comprising a permanentlymadeup bow and neckembracing straps connected therewith and provided with detachable coupling or fastening devices at their ends whereby they may be detachably connected at the back of the neck.
My invention has for its objects, first, to provide a necktie of this character which shall have afinished or ornamental appearance at the back of the neck as well as the front, and, secondly, to provide means for automatically centering the ornamental back portion of the tie and for preventingsaid portion from slipping upwardly on the collar.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved necktie, showing the straps disconnected. Fig. 2 represents in different positions the fastening member attached to the outer end of one of the straps. Fig. 3 represents the fastening member attached to the outer end of the other strap. Fig. 4 represents a top View of the tie,
3 5 showing the ends of its straps connected. Fig. 5representsasection on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, arepresents a permanently- 0 made-upbow which is worn at the front of the neck and has secured to its rear portion a bifurcated hook b, adapted to engage the shank of the front collar-b utton and prevent upward and longitudinal displacement of the how.
c and 0' represent the straps, which are connected with the bow a and have coupling devices at their outer ends whereby they may be detachably connected at the back of the neck. Said coupling devices as here shown comprise asheet metal plate cl, adapted for attachment to the strap a and provided with an eye or slot d and a sheet-metal plate 6,
f 5,to prevent the straps and the rear bow, hereinafter described, from slipping upwardly at the back of the neck.
9 represents a rear bow which is affixed to one end of the strap 0 and projects from said end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, in position to cover the ends of both straps when they are connected, the bow extending across the joint formed by the meeting ends of the straps and concealing said joint as well as the fastening devices.
Each of the straps c c is connected with the bow at by means of a section 0 of elastic ma- 7o terial, there being two of such sections, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. These sections give the straps suflicient ad j ustability to enable them to fit necks of different sizes, and being located at opposite sides of the collar-buttonengaging device b they make each strap equally adjustable, so that the rear bow g is automatically centered or kept in a central position at the back of the neck.
It will be seen that my improved necktie 8o constitutes a very neat and desirable article of neckwear, enabling a made-up bow and its connecting-straps to be used with a standing collar and in connection with waists or garments having no provision for covering the back portion of the tie.
The rear bow g may be in the form of a rosette instead of having the conventional bow form.
The devices for connecting the ends of the straps may be made of wire instead of sheet metal, if desired.
I claim- .A necktie comprisingafront bow a rear bow and a neckband, the front bow carrying a 001- 5 lar-button-en gaging device and the neckband consisting of .two strips each permanently connected at one end to the front bow and having an elastic section, the other'or free ends of the strips being provided with complemental coupling devices and With a collar-engaging hook and with the said rear bow to cover and conceal the said coupling devices when in use.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 14th day of January, A. D. 1897.
CHARLES E. DAMON. Witnesses:
A. D. HARRISON, P. W. PEZZETTI.
