Be it known that I, JAMES WoRrHiNcroN,
of the cityof Manitowoc, Manitowoc county,
State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iuDouble-Oylinder Pumps, of which the followin gis a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in double-cylinder pumps; and the objects I have in view are to provide a double-cylinder pump in which both cylinders are located in the same axial line, or one above the other, with a casing or casings surrounding the same, with provision for the water or liquid passing around the lower cylinder and entering the lower end of the upper cylinder, while the liquid that passes into the lower end of the lower cylinder passes out at the upper end of that cylinder and then passes outside of the upper cylinder, both the water from the lower and from the upper cylinder coming togetherin a pipe or reducer above the upper cylinder.
The invention consists generallyin the construction and combination hereinafter de-.
scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section of a double-cylinder pump embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2 of Fig. I. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.v Fig. 5 is a detail showing a modified manner of securing the two casings together.
In the drawings, 2 2 represent the outer casings, which are of the same size and arranged in the same axial line. A single casing might be employed, but for convenience in putting the pump together I prefer to use the two casin gs arranged as shown.
At the lower end of the lower casing is secured a reducer 3, to which is secured the supply-pipe of both cylinders, and at the upper end of the upper cylinder is a reducer 4, which connects with the service-pipe in both cylinders. Suspended within the casings 2 are the two cylinders 5 and G, arranged one above the other. The lower casing is provided at its lower endwith a cylinder-head 7,
provided with a suitable inlet-valve HS, and this cylinder is provided with a piston 9, secured upon the piston-rod IO and vprovided with a suitable valve ll. Secured to the upper end of the lower cylinder and to the walls of the casings is the head I2. The ends of both casings are preferably secured to the outer Wall of the head I2, as shown in Fig. I, as by soldering or other suitable means. I may, however, form screw-threads upon the ends of the casings and connect them by a threaded ring I3, as shown in Fig. 5. Therefore I do not limit myself to any particular means for securing the ends of the casings to the head I2. The head l2 is provided with the two ports I4, through which the liquid iiows from the lower cylinder into the space between the upper cylinder and the surrounding casing. The head I2 is also provided with a double port l5, which extends from the top of the lower cylinder to the central opening in the head I6 of the upper cylinder. Said upper cylinder is provided with a suitable valve 17.
The upper cylinder' is provided with a pistonlS, valve I9, and a hollow piston-rod 2l, that surrounds the piston-rod IO of the lower cylinder. At the upper end of the upper cylinder is arranged a head 22, to which the uppei` end of said cylinder is secured, said head also being secured to and forming a head for the casing 2. The head 22 is provided with two ports, the port 23 leading from the upper cylinder into the reducer 4 and the port 24 leading from the space surrounding the cylinder 5 into the reducer 4. Said ports are provided with suitable valves 25.
The operation of the device is as follows: The liquid for both cylinders passes through the reducer 3 and a part of it passes through the valve 8 into the lower cylinder. Another part ofthe liquid passes around the cylinder 6 and through the port l5 into the lower part of the upper cylinder. The piston-rods are moved so as to alternate with each other, so
Vthat ifone piston is moving up the other is moving down. The liquid from the lower cylinder passes up around the space outside of the cylinder 5 and the liquid from the upper cylinder passes through the port 23 and into the space above the valve 25. By this means IOO a Constant and steady flow of liquid is produced.
The pump is simple and inexpensive in oonstruetion and can be used in any place where a single-eylinderpump can be used. The cylinders can be easily removed for the purpose of repairing the valves or for any otherpurpose, and all of the parts of the pump are of the simplest and most inexpensive form.
Having,` thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The Combination, with a suitable easing, of two cylinders arranged therein, a head arranged between said cylinders and connected to said easing, said head being provided with ports connecting the interior of eaeh cylinder with the space surrounding the other cylinder, a piston in each cylinder, and means for operating said pist-on.
2. The combination, with the casing 2, of the cylinders 5 and 6 suspended therein, eaeh f of said Cylinders being provided at its lower end with a head having a suitable valve, the head 12 arranged between said cylinders and connected to said easing, and provided with the ports 14 and 15 arranged as described, the pistons arranged in said Cylinders, and the head 22 connected to said easing and to the upper end of the upper cylinder, and provided with the ports 23 and 24.
3. In a pump, the combination, with a suitable easing, of two cylinders arranged therein, one above the other, a spaee being provided between the out'er wall of each cylinder and the inner wall of said easing, means connecting the interior of eaeh cylinder with the spaceoutside of the other cylinder, and a suitable piston in eaeh cylinder.
