J. W. HARPER.
NECK YOKE. No. 580,275. Patented Apr. 6, 1897.
' ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN V. HARPER, OF HIGGINS, NEBRASKA.
NECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,275, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed July 3, 1896. Serial No. 597,955. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. HARPER, of Higgins, in the county of Cheyenne and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in neckyokes, and particularly in the means for securing the same'upon the pole; and the invention has for objects, among others, to provide means for efficiently securing the yoke to the pole so it cannot slip forward off the same if a trace or other part should break or become unfastened, so the movements of the yoke either forward or back may set the clamp to bind upon the pole, and so the clamp may be adjusted clear of the pole to permit the adjustment of the yoke along the pole to adj ust harness-traces or the application of the yoke to or its removal from the pole, as may be desired.
The invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, part in section. Fig. 3 is a front view, part in section; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cam with the pole-loop applied.
The pole A may be of ordinary construction, except that-it preferably has aroughened contact-surface a, which may be a cogged plate secured upon it, or such roughened contact-surface may be otherwise provided Without departing from the spirit of my invention. A loop B,which may be called the pole-loop, extends around the under side of the pole. This pole-loop B has an upper cross-bar h, upon which the cam (J pivots, the pivot-opening 0 in such cam being elongated so the cam can be lifted clear of the pole when it is desired to apply the yoke to or adjust it along the pole. This cam has a cam-surface 0 extending on both sides of its pivot and preferably roughened, as shown.
The neckyoke D has attached to it bars or straps D, which connect with the pole-loop B, and such bars D constitute what may be termed the yoke-loop. The yoke, it will be seen, may, when swung back and forth, en-
gage on the opposite ends of the cam and press the same into binding contact with the pole, so that whether the draft on the yoke be either forward or back it will by such engagement with the cam cause the same to bind on the pole and so prevent any slipping of the yoke thereon.
By lifting the cam clear of the pole the yoke may be adjusted along the same to any position desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A neck-yoke fastening comprising the pole-loop, the cam pivoted to said loop, and arranged to engage the pole and the yoke-loop connected directly to said pole-loop substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination substantially as described of the pole, the cam, a support to which said cam is pivoted between the ends of its cam-surface, the neck-yoke and connections substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination substantially as described of the pole, the cam rocking thereon, a support upon which said cam rocks the cam being also movable bodily toward and from the pole and the neck-yoke substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of the pole, the neckyoke, the cam interposed between the pole and yoke and arranged to be setinto engagement with the pole by the movement of the yoke in either direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the pole, the neckyoke and the cam arranged between said yoke and pole, said cam being pivoted between its ends and having cam-surfaces on opposite sides of its pivot substantially as shown and described.
6. The pole having a roughened or cogged contact-surface the roughened or cogged cam engaging said surface theneck-yoke and connections all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination of the pole, the neckyoke, the cam pivoted between its ends and arranged between the neck-yoke and pole and arranged on opposite sides of its pivot for engagement by the yoke substantially as set forth.
8. The improvement in neck-yokes herein described comprising the pole roughened or cogged as described the pole-loop, and yokeloop pivoted together, the pivoted cam having roughened cam-surfaces on opposite sides With said loop and rocking upon the pole, the yoke, and devices whereby the yoke is held in position to be swung back and forth to en- 15 gage on the opposite ends of the cam to press the same in binding contact with the pole substantially as shown and described.
