Description

(No Model.)
A. B, HENDRYX.
FISHING REEL.
'No. 580,185. Patented Apr. 6. 1897-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREIV B. HENDRYX, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE A. B. HENDRYX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FISHING-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,185, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed February 12, 1897- Serial No. 623,095. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ANDREW B. HENDRYX,Of NewHaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fishing-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view of a reel, showing the outer plate and the cap applied to the bearing therein for the shaft; Fig. 2, a top view, in
partial section, illustrating the manner of securing the cap to the bearing; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the cap detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in fishing-reels, and particularly to that class in which a spool is mounted between the two sides of the frame, through one of which the end of the shaft projects.
through the face of this plate, in which it is supported by throwing a portion of the metal around the bearing-hole outward to increase the length of the bearing. It is desirable that this exposed end of the shaft should be covered, but there is so little metal at this point that it has been found impossible to afiord a bearing to receive a screw-threaded cap.
The object of this invention is to apply a cap over this end of the shaft; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
In illustrating my invention I have shown a reel of ordinary construction, in the outer plate A of which is formed a bearing B for In the ordinary construction the end of the shaft is exposed the shaft C in the usual manner, and which bearing slightly projects beyond the surface of the plate A. Projecting from the plate and near the bearing B, I mount a post D, beneath the head of which I form a notch d, which notch opens toward the bearing B. 5 Over the bearing B, I place a cap E, which is formed with a flange F, in which is a notch f. The interior of the cap corresponds to the exterior of the bearing B and so as to fit closely thereon, the notch f permitting the cap to pass the post D, and when thus located the cap ,is given a partial revolution, which forces the flange F into the notch cl of the post D, and as the width of the notch corresponds to the thickness of the flange F the cap E is securelylocked in position, and the end of the shaft in the outer plate is thereby protected. This cap not only protects the shaft, as stated, but also improves the appearance of the outer plate, and hence the general appearance of the reel, and but slightly increases its cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fishing-reel, the combination with the outer plate thereof, formed with a bearing for the shaft, which bearing projects beyond the surface of the plate, a post adjacent to said bearing, and formed with a notch opening toward said bearing, of a cap adapted to fit over said bearing, and formed with a notched flange for engagement with said post, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW B. HENDRYX. Witnesses:
