I WIESSES N. PETERS, Pholo-Lrthcgnpher. Wnshinglnm D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS P. JENISON, OF RO OK VALLEY, IOWA.
VIOLIN TAIL-PI ECE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,283, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed June 3, 18%. Serial No. 204,056. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS P. J ENISON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rock Valley, in 'the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail-Pieces for Violins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tail-pieces for violins, the object of my invention being to provide a means whereby the E string, which is the one which requires the most frequent tuning or adjust-ment, can be readily tightened, and at the same time provide a reel upon which a quantity of the said string may be wound.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is aplau view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A refers to the tail-piece, which is attached to the violin in the usual manner, said tailpiecebeing provided with three key-hole slots, a,of ordinary construction. The tail-piece is also provided with an opening, B, which is closed on its outer edge by a metallic band. 0, which is securely attached to the edge of the tail-piece by means of screws.
B refers to a slot which is located adjacent .to the opening B, it being separated therefrom bya wall, 11. Through the metal bar 0 and -the wall b a shaft, D, extends, which is provided at its inner end with aratchet wheel, d, which is rigidly attached thereto. The portion of the shaft within the opening B carries a spool, E, having end flanges, said spoo being rigidly mounted on the shaft. To the outer end of said shaft is a crank'handle, F, attached to the sanie, for turning said spool.
G refers to a pawl, which is pivotally attached to the tail-piece immediately in the rear of the slot B, and the front end, 9, is provided with a downwardly-bent portion which will engage with the ratchets of the wheel d,
.which bent end is held in contact with the line with the center portion of the spool.
l t will be noted that the spool, beinglocated within the opening B, is adapted to have a large amount of string wound around thesame, and by means of the crank-handle the string can be wound upon the spool.
The tail-piece, adjacent to the openings B and B and the band 0, is of increased thickness,so as to compensate in respect to strength for the cut-away portions.
1. The improved tail-piece for violins herein described, having cut-away portions B and B, a plate, 0, attached adjacent to the cut-away portion B,in combination with the shaft D,having rigidly mounted thereon a spool. E, crank handle F, and ratchet-wheel d, and the pawl G, pivoted on a line with the ratchet-wheel, the parts being combined and organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The tail-piece A.provided with cut-away portions B and B, plates 0, each having an opening, through which a horizontal shaft passes, said shaft also passing through astrip, b, spool E, rigidly attached to the shaft, said shalt carrying at one end a crank-arm and at the opposite end a ratchet-wheel which eugages with the. spring-pawl attached to the tailpiece,a staple,i,underwhich the string passes,
said tail-piece being made of increasedthickness adjacent to the cut-away portions, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in.
presence of two witnesses.
