Description

J. MQEWEN.
HANGER (No Model.)
No. 580,160. Patented Apr. 6, 1897.
.N NNN Goce s UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN MGEYVEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,160, dated April 6, 1897. Application filed June 19, 1896. Serial No. 596,167. (No model.)
To all 'ILV/tom, t www concern.;
Be it known that l, JOHN MCEWEN, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin ga part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to an improved hanger for supporting planking used in the process of constructing arches in ireproof buildings, the object of the invention being to provide a hanger which is adaptable for use in connection with beams of variable dimensions and for ready removal therefrom after the arch is set.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a crosssectional elevation through two beams of a building, illustrating the position of my hanger in connection therewith. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail perspective views thereof, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a lever adapted for use in raising the hanger for disengaging it from the beams.
In the practice of my invention I provide a vertical hanger A, which comprises an upright a and a longitudinal projection a',which said projection has a finger or stop a2 extending upwardly-on its outer end. The said upright is provided throughout the greater portion of its length with apertures a3, which said apertures are adapted to engage with pins l).
The device further comprises a strap B, which has an aperture b' in the outer end thereof for engagement with the upright a of the hanger A. For the purpose of lateral adj ustment this said aperture may be extended into a slot b2, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. i of the drawings.
In the operation of the device each angleiron beam C of the building is supplied with one hanger, and in attaching the hangers to the beams the strap Bis first adj usted to the upper iiange of the beam by means of its downwardly and inwardly extending tongue B'. The hanger A is then connected to the strap B and adjusted vertically in the desired posit-ion, when a pin b is passed through one of the apertures a3 of the said hanger, whereby it is maintained in a depending position ready to receive the planking or temporary scaffolding adapted to hold the tire-bricks D, formingthe arch. This said scaifolding comprises beams E, which rest upon the longitudinal extensions of the hangers and laterallyextended planking e. Having set the planking, the wedge-shaped fire-bricks are set and allowed to thoroughly dry. Then the whole structure, comprisin g the plankin g and hangers, is lowered down out of engagement with the beams; and to provide means for readily disengaging the hangers A from the straps B a clamp F is supplied, which said clamp comprises a strap f and ahinged plate f the Whole adapted to surround the uprights a of the hanger A, and to securely connect the said clamp to the upright the plate f is provided with a threaded bolt f2, which said bolt has a contracted outer end f3, adapted for engagement with one of the apertures a3 of the upright a.
Having secured the clamp to the upright, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, a lever G is brought into engagement with the said clamp. This lever comprises a rod g, a heel g', and an upwardly-extended nger g2, and in the operation thereof, it being placed in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, pressure will be applied to the outer end of the rod g until the hanger is forced upwardly to a sufficient extent to remove the pin b, after which the hanger can be readily disengaged from the strap B and removed `from the beam. The lever G may further be supplied upon its outer end with a forkg3, which said fork has a heel g4 upon the inner end thereof. This said fork may be used in connection with the clamp F to pry the same up when a large amount of leverage is required. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hanger adapted for usein constructing arches of reproof buildings, comprising an L-shaped upright having apertures therethrough and a longitudinal-strap for engage- IOO ment with said upright and a pin for maintaining the two parts in connection With each other, substantially as shown and described.
2. A hanger for supporting planking in the construction of treproof buildings, comprising an adjustable upright having a horizontal projection at its lower end and apertures throughout its length, an apertured strap with a tongue thereon for engagement with a beam of a building, and a pin for maintaining the said upright and strap in connection, substantially as shown and described.
' 3. The combination of an apertured L- shaped upright and alongitudinal strap having a tongue thereon, and a pin for connecting the upright to the strap, substantially as shown and described.
4. As a means for supporting plankin g, the combination ot a longitudinal strap having a tongue thereon for engagement with an angle-iron beam of a building, and an aperture through the outer end thereof; with an adjustable upright which engages with the said aperture, said upright being supplied with a series of apertures throughout the greater portion of its length, and with a longitudinal extended projection for supporting the planking, the said upright and strap being connected to each other' by means of a pin which passes through one of the apertures of the upright, substantially as shown and described.
5. In combination with a hanger comprising an upright and a longitudinal strap, a clamp comprising a strap, a pivoted plate and a threaded bolt for engagement With said plate; with a lever having a heel thereon, substantially as shown and described.
I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 13th day of June,
JOHN MCEWEN. Vitnesses:
M. G. MCLEAN, S. SCHWARTZ.
