UNITED STATES PATENT Fries,
FREDERICK A. TOMPKINS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
ADJUSTABLE HANGER FOR CENTERS FOR FIREPROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,099, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed August 25,1896. Serial No. 603,867. (No model.)
To (.tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. Tour- KINs, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Adjustable Hangers for Centers for Fireproofing; and I do hereby declare that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a novel removable platform adapted to be used in packing the fireproof filling between the iron I- beams as is now customary in the construction of fireproof buildings.
The object of my invention is to provide a platform that shall be light, portable, readily operated, and be so constructed as not to interfere with the operations of the workmen using the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a View disclosing two ordinary I-beams between which my portable and removable platform has been fixed previously to receiving the fireproof filling, which is to be packed between the two beams. Fig. 2 shows a bottom view of the platform as removed, while Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively, an end view and a top view of one of the retaining-bars as used in my invention.
My invention comprises, essentially, a preferably wooden platform B, which is reinforced below with two or more transverse sills O, the whole being of a suitable size and length, so that it can be readily and easily handled.
Secured to two or more points and preferably attached to the sills G are a system of retaining-bars, which bars are provided with a hook-nosing and an extension F, which are pivotally secured at suitable points to the sills in such a manner that the hooknosing 2, which extends at right angles to the extension F, projects a suitable distance beyond the platform B, as is shown in Fig. 1. Secured near the outer end and in the path of the extension F is a rack-plate H, into which the end 3 of the retaining-bars is adapted to look, as is shown in Fig. 3, this end being slightly curved outward, so as to find a ready seating within the serrations of the plate H. The platform is next provided with one or more hangers D, by means of which the platform is brought into position below the I- beams A, when the retaining-bars are locked from above, being operated by means of the retaining-strands b, which are secured to the end of the retaining-bars, passing through an opening 4 therein, as is shown in Fig. 4. As these strands are drawn upward the hooknosings are forced upon the flanges of the I- beams and are locked by riding into the serrations of the plate H, the strands b then being permitted to loop below the platform, so that the only projections within the space to be filled are the hook-nosing of the retainingbars and the hangers D, by means of which the platform is raisedor lowered.
As the fireproof filling is usually to project and extend below the I-beams A, I provide the platform with four small rectangular blocks a, the thickness of these blocks corresponding to the thickness of the material to project below the bottom of the I-beam.
After the platform has been placed in position the fireproof filling can be thrown and packed upon the same, and when completed the platform can be readily lowered by attaching a suitable strand to the hangers D to lower the platform, the openings made bythe hook-nosings 2, the hangers D, and the blocks a being later closed by the finishing coat of plaster.
This device is exceedingly simple, and to make the same adjustable the sills C are provided with the slotted openings 1, through which the bolts or pins 5 extend, so that these retaining-bars can be given lateral adj ustment.
The device is noticeable because of its extreme simplicity; and,
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a platform of a series of retaining-bars, said bars being adjustably. and movably secured to said platform, said retaining-bars comprising an upper hook-nosing extending above the platform, said bars further being provided with suitable extensions extending below said platform in combination with a rack-plate adaptstrands extending above the platform and secured to said retaining-bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK A. TOMPKINS.
