R. H. ROWLAND. PIE CRUST SUPPORT.
Patented Apr. 6, 1897 Wzli'nas'sea iro UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROXVLAND HILL RO\VLAND, OF WOODBRIDGE, ENGLAND.
PIE-CRUST SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,094, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed January 4, 1897. Serial No 617,971. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROWLAND HILL ROW- LAND, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, in the county of Suffolk, England, have invented a Pie-Crust Support, of which the following is a specification.
Pie-crusts are now commonly supported during the process of baking by an inverted cup. This method has several disadvantages. The heat expels the air from the cup, so that on cooling a vacuum is formed and the greater part of the juice of the pie is sucked up into the cup. There being no escape for the steam, the contents of the pie are damaged, and the internal pressure often causes the juice to rise up and injure the crust and also escape.
The object of this invention is to remedy these defects.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my pie-crust support; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.
(I, is an inverted cup similar to those now in use, but having an opening a at its top and preferably also openings a just below its to Z3 is a funnel-shaped cap on the top of the cup at. It may either be made in one piece with it, as shown, or may be separate. In either case the inside of the funnel b is separated from the top of the cup or by ridges 0, so that passages d are left leading from the outside of the cup to the inside of the funnel through which steam can escape from the inside of the pie. The upper part of the funnel projects through the pie-crust,which rests on its lower part.
What I claim is The combination of an inverted cup, a funnel above the cup, a hole at the top of the cup and passages leading from the outside of the cup to the inside of the funnel.
