Description

(N0 Model.)
W. A. GORKLE. WIRE FENCE.
No. 579,791. Patented Mar. 30, 97
UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
WILLIAM A. OORKLE, OF IVAUSEON, OHIO.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,791, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed November 23, 1896. Serial No. 613,162. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, "WILLIAM A. CORKLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wauseon, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Wire fences; and its object is to provide an improved clamp or fastener for securing the vertical stays to the horizontal strands or wires, whereby the stays are securely held in place.
Theinvention consists, essentially, in form ing the horizontal strands or wires with bends at the points where the stays are to be secured, in combination with the stays, consisting of a piece of wire bent over at the center, forming two vertical arms, and the fasteners each consisting of a piece of wire bent into a pcculiar form and engaging with said bends and vertical arms, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wire fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section showing the manner of connecting the stay and horizontal wire by means of the fasten er. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener detached. 1
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the horizontal wires or strands of an ordinary wire fence, provided at suitable points, where the stays are to be connected, with bends 2.
The numeral 3 designates the stays, each consisting of a piece of wire of suitable length bent over at its center, forming two vertical arms 4, which, when the same are connected with the wires 1, are located at the ends of the bonds 2.
The numeral 5 designates the fasteners. Each of these fasteners consists of a piece of wire bent over at the center, forming a loop 6, which engages with the bends 2 of the wires 1. Said wires are then bent backwardly, forming loops 7, which engage with one of the arms of the stay, passing behind the loop 6 to the other arm of the stay, when the extremities are bent into hooks 8, which engage with said arm. By this means a spring-fastener is provided for connecting the vertical stays with the horizontal wires, which will securely hold the stays in place, yet allow them to be readily detached when desired.
The fasteners can be produced very economically and can be applied without difficulty to the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination in a fence of the horizontal wires or strands formed with bends at suitable points, and the stays comprising the vertical parallel arms located at the ends of said bends, with the fasteners consisting of a piece of wire bent over at the center forming a loop engaging with said bends and then bent over one of said arms and extended backward behind said loop past the other arm of the stay and then bent around the said arm, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afliXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. CORKLE.
