CHARLES V. HUDSON, OF NVEEDSPORF-NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO FRED M. HARRINGTON, OF SAME PLACE.
BICYCLE LOCK AND COASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,539, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed November 24, 1896. Serial No. 613,317. (No model) To (0Z7, whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. IIUDsoN, of \Veedsport, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Coaster and Look for Bicycles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to bicycles, having more particularly reference to attachment-s therefor.
My object is to produce a combined coaster and lock for cycles, adapted to be easily attached and detached, cheap and durable in its construction, positive in its operation, and of great utility; and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel f eatures of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of a portion of the fork, showing my device attached thereto and showing its position in dotted lines when locked, and showing the rim and tire of'the wheel in cross-section and one of the spokes. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, looking at the device from the right. Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudinal sections through the two parts of the coaster and lock, showing their internal construction. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same as they appear when closed for the purpose of locking the wheel from rotation, enlarged. Fig. 6 is a view of the key.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and A are the two standards of the forks of the bicycle, constructed in any ordinary way.
CL and a are two cylinders having their pcripheries roughened or provided with other suitable means for easily preventing the foot from slipping off and are provided with clamps Z) and b for securing them to the standards, as shown in the drawings.
The cylinder at is provided with a latch c, pivoted substantially centrally therein, having a lug c at one end, its opposite end rounded from the bottom, as shown at d, and d is a strap-spring secured within the cylinder, its
free end engaging with the outer end of the latch c, as shown at c in Fig. The outer end of the cylinder is provided with a slotway e to receive the key B, and the opposite end of the cylinder, upon its lower side, is provided with a slotway f for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
The cylinder a has its outer end preferably plugged or otherwise filled and in its opposite end has a slotway in its lower face h. It is also provided with a piece of tubing g, adapted to move to and fro easily within the cylinder, its inner end being provided with a notch or opening g, and secured to the lower side of the tube is a finger-piece 7L, adapted to travel in the slotway h.
Z is a spring or other elastic connection. connecting the inner end of the tube g with the outer end of the cylinder a, so as to always hold the tube g normally within the cylinder.
My invention is operated as follows: The cylinders when properly secured to the standards of the forks serve as coasters and are used in the ordinary way. When the machine is not in use and it is desired to lock the wheel from rotation, I take hold of the finger-piece h and draw the tube 9 across between the spokes of the wheel, inserting its end into the opposite cylinder until the lug c engages with the notch g, thereby holding it in its position in line with the pathway of the spokes, preventing them from rotating, the arm of the finger-piece h passing into the slotway f.
The key B is preferably constructed torsional in form, so that as it passes into the slotway 6 it will rotate sufficiently to allow its end to come into engagement with the rounded end of the latch 0, thereby raising it and allowing the opposite end to drop out of engagement with the notch g, when the spring Z will immediately withdraw it to its normal position.
Theslotwayf is for the purpose of preventing the tube 9 being rotated when the lock is in use.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a bicycle a combined coaster and lock comprising two parts, each provided with means for securing it to the fork, a tube or rod yieldingly secured in one part and adapted to have its outerend secured in the opposite part for the purposes specified.
2. In a bicycle a combined coaster and lock comprising tWo parts a and a, each provided With means for securing it to the fork, the part a being provided with a spring-actuated tube and having a notch at its outer end; the part a being provided With a latch adapted to engage with said notch and means for disengaging them as set forth.
3. In a bicycle a combined coaster and lock comprising two parts a and a, each part provided with means for securing it to the fork,
CHARLES IV. HUDSON.
