PATENT FFTCEa THOMAS E. OOE, OF WARREN, OHIO.
BATH-TUB lVlAT.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 579,532, dated March 23, 1897. Application filed June 80, 1896. Serial No. 597,585. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS It. COE, of WVarren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Bath-Tub Mats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved mat for bath-tubs, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive mat to fit over the bottom and head end of a bath-tub, so as to render the same comfortable when the tub is being used, especially by invalids. This I accomplish by providing a mat composed principally of sponge, which extends over the bottom and head end of a tub and also along a portion of the parallel side walls. The sponge absorbs the water in the tub and forms an easy and comfortable cushion for the occupant. In order to add to the strength of the mat, a wire or other suitable frame extends longitudinally through the center thereof, the sponge being projected from both sides of said frame. The bottom, head, and sides of the mat may be connected together or separate, so as to be capable of being easily removed from the tub.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a tub provided with my improvements, portions of the tub being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3
is a cross-sectional View on the line 3 3, Fig.
2. Fig. 4 is a view of the head-section removed.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the mat as an entirety, a being the bottom section, a the parallel side sections, and a the headsection. The main constituent of each section is sponge b, which is connected to a centrallyinterposed wire or open-Work frame I). The
sponge projects on both sides of this frame so as .to entirely conceal the latter and prevent the occupant of the tub from contacting therewith, The bottom section a rests on the bottom of the tub, while at right angles thereto and against the parallel sides of the tub, extending upwardlya short distance over the latter, are the side sections ct. The headsection a fits over the head end of the tub.
In practice water supplied to the tub will first be absorbed by the sponge composing the several sections, and hence when the tub is occupied asoft mat is formed for the occupant, thus avoiding contact with the body of the tub. This is of especial advantage for invalids and children, forming, as it does, comfort and ease while bathing. The several sections being capable of being easily removed can be taken from the tub after use for the purpose of cleansing and drying. Then, too, the bOlZ'. tom and side sections are capable of being inverted, if desired, since the sponge covering extends beyond both sides of the interposed frames.
I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a mat for bath-tubs consisting of a wire frame and sponge extending over both sides .of said frame and entirely inclosing the latter, as set forth.
2. The hereindescribed mat for bath-tubs, comprising the bottom, side sections, and head-section, all disconnected, said bottom, side and head sections being composed of central frames and sponge extending over and inclosing said frames, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
THOMAS E. ooE.
