SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,139, dated March 23, 1897.

To all 11171/0711, it may concern:

Beit known that I, GEORGE B. DEARDORFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canal Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothpicks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the pick, showing all of its parts properly assembled. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the cap and-its cleaning`- head. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the piclehandle, showing the cap removed. Fig. 4. is a similar view showing the tip removed. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the tip.

The present invention has relation to tooth picks; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the handle, which may be constructed in the ordinary manner, reference being had to properly attaching the bristles a and the different parts belonging to and forming a part of the pick proper. One end of the handle A may be provided with the ordinary brush, to which the bristles a are attached in the ordinary manner, and the opposite end of the handle is provided with the longitudinal recess l), which is for the purpose of receiving and holding the tip c, which tip is so formed that it will snugly iit the recess b when placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and is for the purpose of providing a suitable toothpick.

For the purpose of providing a means for easily removing the tip c to insert a new one the lateral opening ol is provided, which lateral opening leads into the recess b and is so located that any suitable object can be placed back of the tip to press it forward.

For the purpose of protecting the tipV c and at the same time providing a stiff brush or rubbing-head the cap B is provided, which cap is provided with the rubbing-head C. The rubbing-head O is'notched or creased at its outer end, so' as to provide a rough rubbingsurface and is preferably formed of rubber; but I do not desire to be confined to any particular material, inasmuch as various kinds of material may be used without departing from the nature of my invention.

In use, when it is desired to use the brush in the ordinary manner, the cap or cover B is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, which brings both the brush and rubbinghead into proper position for use, and when it is desired to use the tip for cleaning the cavities of teeth the cover B is removed, as illustrated in Fig. 3, at which time the tip c is exposed and can be used as a toothpick.

The toothpick here described is more particularly adapted for cleaning false teeth and is especially designed for that purpose; but it will be understood that it may be used without any particular reference to the kind of teeth it is used upon.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture a toothpick consisting of the handle A, provided with the recess b, having therein the tip c, the lateral opening d, leading into the recess b, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
