MACHINE FOR MARBLING PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,677, dated March 9, 1897. Application filed May 25, 1896. Serial No. 593,020. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSIAH MILES REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Park Ridge, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Marbling Paper, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to machines for marbling paper; and the object thereof is to provide a machine for this purpose which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which paper for various purposes may be given a variegated color in imitation of marble or similar substances.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved ma chine Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a partial central vertical section.
In the practice of my invention I provide a base-plate or other suitable support 5, which may be of any desired form and composed of any desired material, and above which is supported on standards 6 a ring 7, within which is an annular tank or Vessel 8, which is supported on standards 9, and within the annular tank or vessel 8 is another ring 10, which is supported on standards 11, and it will thus be seen that the ring 7, the annular tank or vessel 8, and the ring 10 are arranged concentrically, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Mounted upon the ring 10 is a gear ring or wheel 12, which is provided with gear-teeth on its perimeter, and mounted centrally of the base and extending upwardly through the rings and 12 is a shaft 13, which is pro vided at its base with a beveled gear-wheel 14, and mounted transversely of the frame of the machine above the bottom plate or support is a shaft 15, which is provided at one end with a crank 16 and at the other with a gear-wheel 17, which is adapted to operate in connection with a corresponding gear-wheel 18, which is mounted on a shaft 19, which extends parallel with the shaft to about the center thereof, and which is provided at its inner end with a beveled gear-wheel 20, which is adapted to operate in connection with the gear-wheel 14, mounted on the vertical shaft 13.
The shaft 13 passes through a cross-head 21, secured to the ring 10, and above the cross-head 21 is a nut or bur 22, above which is placed the head 23 of a suitable frame consisting of radial arms 24, which extend outwardly to the ring 7, and a segmental or circular band 25, by which said arms are connected, and the outer edge of said frame is supported on the ring 7 by rollers 26, and
said frame is free to turn on the shaft 13 and the ring 7, and mounted on the upper end of the shaft 13 and above said frame is an arm 27, which is adapted to be rigidly connected with said shaft by a set-screw 28.
The revoluble frame composed of the arms 24 and the segmental or semicircular band 25 may be of any desired size, or it may extend part way or entirely around the ring 7 and thus cover said ringand the annular tank or vessel 8, and I also preferably employ a segmental or circular plate 29, which forms a part of said frame and which is connected with the arms 21 thereof and which is preferably placed directly over the rings 10 and 12, and mounted on this revoluble frame are standards 30, which support a roller 31, and adjacent to thestandards and the roller 31 are other rollers 32 and 33, which are arranged in line therewith and which are supported by a suitable frame consisting of standards 34;, which are mounted on the revoluble frame and connected by cross plates or bars 35, this construction being best shown in Figs. 1
and 2.
Mounted on the shaft of the roller 31 is a pulley-wheel 36, and 011 the shaft of the roller 33 is a similar pulley-wheel 37, and mounted on said pulley-wheels is a belt or band 38, and the inner end of the shaft of the roller 33 is provided with a beveled gear-wheel 39, which operates in connection with a corre sponding beveled gear-wheel 40, mounted on a vertical shaft 41, on the lower end of which is a pinion 42, which is adapted to engage with and be operated by the gear-teeth on the perimeter of the ring 12, and directly below the rollers 33 and 32 is a roller 43, which is provided with a plurality of longitudinal rows of outwardly-directed or radial rods or arms 44, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The form of the supports for the rollers 31, 32, 33, and 43 is immaterial, and these rollers may be supported on any suitable frame or in any desired manner, the only object in this connection being to suitably support said rollers in substantially the position shown in the drawings and to operate the same as hereinafter described.
In practice a roll of paper 45 is mounted on the central roller 32 and passed around the roller 33 and beneath the roller 43 and the arms or rods thereon, and then carried up and connected with the roller 31, and said roller 31 is adapted to serve as a heat-roller and may be heated in any desired manner. I also mount upon the revoluble frame a plurality of tanks 46, but one of which is shown, and said tanks are provided with a perforated bottom 47, as shown in Fig. 1, the top being broken away so as to show said bottom, and said tanks are also provided with a fillingorifice or funnel 48, and each is in connection with the cylinder 49 of an air-pump by means of a pipe 50. Although I-have shown but one of these tanks, I have shown in Fig. 2 a plurality of nozzles 51, with which the other tanks may be connected, said nozzles being, as will be understood, in communication with the cylinder 49 of the air-pump, and said cylinder is provided with the usual piston 52, with which is connected a piston-rod 53, and said piston-rod is connected with a crankshaft 54, which is mounted on the upper end of a vertical shaft 55, the lower end of which is provided with a pinion 56, which is adapted to be operated by the gear-teeth on the wheel 12.
In practice the annular tank or vessel is filled with sizing composed of the solution of slippery-elm, flaxseed, and gum-tragacanth, and which is preferably of such consistency as to constitute a cushion upon which the coloring is placed, and the coloring material, which is placed in the tanks or receptacles 46, consists of earth colors, such as are usually employed for this purpose and which are in a fluid condition and adapted to be forced through the perforated bottoms of said tanks or receptacles by air-pressure applied thereto by means of the air-pump, and it will be understood that any desired kind or class of sizing may be employed in the tank or vessel 8, and also that any suitable colors may be placed in the tanks or receptacles 46, and that any desired number of said tanks or receptacles may be employed.
The frame on which the paper-rollers and the operative apparatus connected therewith are mounted and on which the air-pump and the tanks or receptacles 46 are also mounted is revolved by the arm 27, which is secured to the shaft 13, and said'arm when the shaft 13 is revolved by the shafts 15 and 19 strikes against the frame by which the rollers 32 and 33 are supported, and thus carries said revoluble frame around the wheel 7 and over the tank or receptacle 8, and in this operation the shaft 41 is also revolved, and this shaft revolves the roller 33, which in turn revolves the roller 32, and by means of the belt 38 the roller 31 is also revolved and the paper is unwound from the roller 32, drawn over the roller 33 and beneath the roller 43, and rewound on the roller 31, and in this operation the rods or arms 44, which are arranged in longitudinal rows on said roller 43, depress the paper as it passes thereunder into con tact with the sizing and also into contact with the colors which have been deposited thereon through the bottoms of the tanks or receptacles 46. The effect of this operation is to give the paper or one surface thereof the marbled or variegated appearance required, and said appearance will depend largely upon the character of the colors employed, and, as hereinbefore stated, the roller 31, on which the paper is remound, may be heated in any desired manner, in order to dry the paper as it is rewound thereon.
It will be understood that the machine is operated by means of the crank 16 on the shaft 15, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
Instead of rewinding the paper on the roller 31, as hereinbefore described, I may provide a roller similar to the roller 44 and provided in a similar manner with longitudinal rows of radial arms or rods 61, and the paper may be passed over this roller and carried to any desired point, the object of this construction being to avoid blurring or injuring the paper when it is not entirely dry.
It is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of 'my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported main tank or vessel, of a plurality of rollers supported thereover, one of which is adapted to receive a roll of paper, and one of which is mounted directly over said tank, said paper being adapted to be passed around said lastnamed roller, and to be rewound on another roller, and acolor tank or receptacle provided with'a perforated bottom, said main tank or vessel being adapted to receive sizing, on which the colors are deposited, and said paper-roller, and said color tank .or receptacle being adapted to be carried around said main tank or receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a machine for marbling paper, the
combination with a suitably-supported annular tank or vessel, of a revoluble frame mounted thereover, three rollers supported on said frame, and at one side thereof, asupplemental roller supported immediately below two of said rollers, and immediately over said tank or vessel, a color tank or receptacle also supported on said revoluble frame, and provided with a perforated bottom, and means for revolving said frame, substantially-as shown and described.
3. In a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported annular tank or vessel, of a revoluble frame mounted thereover, a paper-roller supported above said annular frame, a roller at each side thereof, around one of which the paper is adapted to be drawn, and upon the other of which the paper is adapted to be rewound, a supplemental roller directly below two of said rollers, and directly over one side of said tank or vessel, said supplemental roller being provided with a plurality of radial rods or arms, and means for revolving said rollers, and a colortank mounted on said frame, and provided with a perforated bottom, and means for revolving said frame around said annular tank or vessel, substantially as shown and described.
4. In I a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported ann ular tank or vessel, of a vertical shaft passing centrally therethrough, a frame mounted on said shaft and revoluble around and over said tank or vessel, a plurality of paper-rollers mounted on said revoluble frame, one of which is adapted to receive a roll of paper which is adapted to be passed over another roller adjacent thereto, and to be rewound on the third roller, at the opposite side thereof, a supplemental roller mounted below two of said rollers, and directly over one side of said annular tank or vessel, and provided with a plurality of radial arms or rods, and color-tanks also mounted on said revoluble frame, and provided with perforated bottoms, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported annular tank or vessel, of a vertical shaft passing centrally therethrough, a frame mounted on said shaft and revoluble around and over said tank or vessel, a plurality of paper-rollers mounted on said revoluble frame, one of which is adapted to receive a roll of paper, and
. which is adapted to be passed over another roller adjacent thereto, and to be rewound on a third roller at the opposite side thereof, a supplemental roller mounted below two of said rollers, and directly over one side of said annular tank or vessel, and provided with a plurality of radial arms or rods, and colortanks also mounted on said revoluble frame, and provided with perforated bottoms, an air pump in communication with said tanks, and means for operating said rollers and said airpump, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported annular tank or vessel, of a vertical shaft passing centrally therethrough, a frame mounted on said shaft, and revoluble around and over said tank or vessel, a plurality of paper-rollers mounted on said revoluble frame, one of which is adapted to receive a roll of paper, which is adapted to be passed over another roller adjacent thereto, and to be rewound on a third roller at the opposite side thereof, a supplemental roller mounted below two of said rollers, and directly over one side of said annular tank or vessel, and provided with a plurality of radial rods or arms, and colortanks also mounted on said revoluble frame, and provided with perforated bottoms, an airpump in communication with said tanks, and means for operating said rollers and said airpump, consisting of a gearing suitably supported adjacent to said annular tank or vessel, and vertical shafts, one of which is provided with a pinion which operates in connection with said gear-ring and with a crank which is connected with the piston-rod of the air-pump, and the other being provided with a pinion, which operates in connection with said gear-rin g and with a beveled gear-wheel which operates in connection with a corresponding beveled gear-wheel mounted on the shaft of one of said rollers, substantially as shown and described.

In a machine for marbling paper, the combination with a suitably-supported annular tank or vessel, of a vertical shaft passing therethrough, and adapted to be revolved by means of transverse shafts, and gear-wheels suitably supported below said tank or vessel, a frame mounted upon said vertical shaft, above said tank or vessel, and revoluble thereon, three rollers supported upon said frame, and arranged in line with each other, and a supplemental roller mounted below said rollers, and immediately over one side of said tank or receptacle, and provided with a plurality of radial arms or rods, and color-tanks also mounted on said revoluble frame, and provided with perforated bottoms, an airpump in communication with said color-tanks and means for revolving said rollers, and for operating said air-pump, consisting of a gearring suitably supported'above and concentrically of said tank or vessel, and vertical shafts which are operated thereby, one of which is provided with a crank, which is connected with the piston-rod of the air-pump, and the other with a beveled gear-wheel, which operates in connection with a corresponding beveled gear-wheel mounted on the shaft of one of said rollers, substantially as shown and described.
8.
