Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 7, 1916. Serial No. 89,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH WENDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Duplex Merry-Go-R-ound with Display- Racks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to merrygo-rounds, and the main object is to provide a novel and interesting device of said kind, it being so constructed that it carries people in opposite circular directions simultaneously, and thereby makes the speed of travel appear twice as fast as it really is.
Another object is to provide a merry-goround with special means for serving as a display medium for advertisements and merchandise.

Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates a base upon which is supported on posts 2 a floor 3. Fixed centrally 011 the base is a casting l rigidly holding a mast or upright shaft 5. Upon said upright shaft is journaled to rotate a sleeve 6, to whose lower end is secured a bevel gear 7 rotated by a bevel pinion 8 fixed on a shaft 9 which represents any kind of engine or motor.
10 is an idle gear serving to support and steady the pinion 8 and also three or more other pinions 11 (see Fig. which are fixed on the inner ends of three radially extending shafts 12, which are journaled in bearings 13 on the base or on some of the posts 2, while the inner end of each shaft is steadied by having its wheel 11 partly journaled upon one of the arms M of a spider 15 (as best shown to the left in Fig. 3), said spider being fixed on the shaft 5. Fixed on each shaft 12 are several eccentrics 13 operating in yokes 16, having rods 17 sliding in bearings 18 fixed on the floor. Said rods are arranged in sets of three or more in a circle, each circle larger than the other and all of them in concentric relation, and to each set of rods are secured one or more hoops 19, which are provided with hooks 20 or similar devices in any desired numbers for holding merchandise or advertising signs to be displayed on the vertically recip rocated frames thus formed of the uprights 17 and the hoops 19.
Journaled on the upper part of the shaft 5 are several bevel gears 21, each of which meshes with either the upper or lower side of bevel pinions 22, rotating on studs 23 fixed in the sides of collars 24 fixed on the upright shaft. 011 said gears 21 are placed between lugs 25 and secured by bolts 25*, radial arms 26, from each of which depends a rod 27, to whose lower ends are fixed annular platforms 3O riding on rubber tired wheels 30 and carrying seats 28. Said rods 27 are connected in circular sets by bracing hoops 29. The lower gear 21 is fixed to the sleeve 6, so as to rotate, by means of the gears 21. and 23 above it, the several platforms 30, each in a reverse direction to the next platform. The topmost gear 21 also rotates a spider 26 fixed to it, but said spider carries no seats but only hooks as 20 on which to suspend things to be displayed; also the rotating hoops 29 may have hooks 20 on which to display things.
The whole structure is provided with a canvas roof 31 secured upon a frame work 32 fixed on the upper end portion of the shaft or mast 5.
In the operation of the device the signs and other things to be displayed are suitably suspended or secured in place, the people occupy the seats 28, and when the motor 9 has been started, if the circularmotien of the seats around the mast he say fifty miles per hour, the rider by looking at the next platform will get the impression that he is traveling a hundred miles an hour. In the meantime the display racks are moving up and down so as to attract attention and to make the device look like a mix-up well worth seeing, and the displayed by the riders of the device and by the pedessigns and goods can be observed both trians and others looking on. The entire device may also be used only for displaying advertisements and goods.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, a series of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft betweenthe collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of different diameters, and means for rotating the gear fixed on the lower end of the sleeve.

In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed. on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, a series of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft between the collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of different diameters means for rotatin the ear fixed on the lower end of the sleeve, and rods sus pended from the arms of each spider.

In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, a series of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft between the collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of different diameters, means for rotating the gear fixed on the lower end of the sleeve; rods suspended from the arms of the spiders, hoops connecting said rods, and means on the hoops for carrying things to be displayed.

In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a' sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, a series of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft between the collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of difierent diameters, rods suspended from the arms of each spider, annular platforms arranged in concentric order and attached by the rods one platform to each spider, means upon the platform for people to sit on, hoops connecting the rods from the spiders and means for rotating the gear fixed at the lower end of the sleeve.
In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, aseries of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft between the collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears .on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of different diameters, rods suspended from the arms of each spider, annular platforms arranged inconcentric order and attached by the rods one platform to each spider, means upon the platform for people to sit on, hoops connecting the rods from the spiders and means for rotating the gear fixed at the lower end of the sleeve, a floor below the platforms, wheels carried by the platforms and rolling on the floor.

In a device of the kind described, a base, a vertical shaft fixed in the base, a bevel gear mounted to rotate on the shaft near the base, a sleeve fixed to the gear to rotate on the shaft, a series of collars fixed on the shaft above the sleeve and having each a lateral stud, bevel pinions mounted to rotate one on each stud, a series of bevel gears rotatable on the shaft between the collars and meshing with the bevel pinions, the lowest one of said gears on the shaft being fixed to the upper end of the sleeve so as to rotate all the pinions and gears above it in opposite directions, radial arms fixed to said gears on the shaft and being of different lengths on each gear so as to form with the gears spiders of different diameters, rods suspended from the arms of each spider, annular platforms arranged in concentric order and attached by the rods one platform to each spider, means upon the platform for people to sit on, hoops connecting the rods from the spiders and means for rotating the gear fixed at the lower end of the sleeve, a floor below the platforms, Wheels carried by the platforms and rolling on the floor, a series of radial shafts mounted below the floor and having each at the inner end a bevel pinion meshing with the bevel gear at the lower end of the sleeve, eccentrics fixed on the radial shafts, yokes embracing the eccentrics and having rods extending in concentric circles upward through the floor and being guided therein, hoops connecting the upper portions of said rods whereby concentric vertically reciprocal display racks are formed, and means for supporting things to be displayed on the racks.

In a device of the kind described, a base, an upright shaft fixed in the middle of the base, posts projecting upward from the base, a floor supported on the posts, a motor near the lower part of the shaft and having a bevel pinion, a bevel gear rotatable on the upright shaft and driven by the pinion, a sleeve or tube fixed to the bevel gear and extending upward about the shaft, a bevel gear fixed to the upper end of the sleeve, aseries of spiders rotatable on the shaft above the tube and provided With bevel gears, the said upper part of the shaft and idle pinions on the studs to form operative connection between the spider gears and the gear at the upper end of the sleeve, annular concentric platforms having supporting rollers traveling upon the floor,'and operative connections between the platforms and the spiders.
