COMBINATION CHAIR AND IRONING: BOARD STAND- Patented Mar.9,1897,
(No Model.)
U ITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
BASIL H. COOPER, OF BLUEFIELD, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ANDREW P. GLADDEN, OF SAME PLACE.-
COMBINATION CHAIR AND IRONING -BOARD STAND.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 578,446, dated March 9, 1897. Application filed August 12, 1896- Serial No. 602,464. (No model.)
' clare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combination chairs and ironing-board stands, the object of the same being to provide a simple and cheap kitchen-chair which is so constructed that it may be readily converted into a stand for supporting an ironing-board.
The invention consists of a chair made of wood, with four legs, two uprights rising from the rear legs, a pair of cross-bars slightly separated one from the other at the upper end of said uprights, and a pair of supplemental supporting-legs secured to a supplemental seat, which is hinged to the chair so that it may be folded inwardly or outwardly, according to the form in which the deviceis to be used. In connection with the foregoing parts I employ an ironing-board one end of which is adapted to fit between the cross-bars connecting said uprights and the other end of which is adapted to rest upon the cross-bar connecting the upper ends of said supplemental legs.
The invention also consists of certain details of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device in its chair form. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device shown in the form it assumes when used as an ironingboard support.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My improved device is made up of a chair 1, of wood or other suitable material, having a seat 2 and four legs 3 3 and 4 4:, suitably braced and supported, the legs 4 being extended upwardly from the seat 2 and connected by cross-bars 5 6 at their upper ends, slightly separated one from the other, the said uprights and cross-bars constituting the back of the chair. Hinged to the outer edge of the seat 2 is a supplemental seat 7, having supplemental legs 8 8, secured to its outer edge, which are extended upwardly, as shown, and connected by a cross-.bar 9. The said supplemental seat and legs are also suitably braced and supported. In connection with the foregoing 7 parts I employ an ironing-board 10, which is slightly wider at one end than at the other and slightly thicker at its narrow end than at its wide end. The wide end of said ironing-board is adapted to be inserted between the cross-bars 5 and 6, resting upon the latter, and has its outer end supported upon the cross-bar 9, connecting the upper ends of the supplemental legs 88.
In using my device as a chair the supplemental seat 7,with the supplemental legs connected thereto, is folded inwardly, so that it I rests upon the seat 2, and the supplemental legs lie between the uprights and legs 4 4:. When it is desired to convert the said chair into an ironing-board support, said supplemental seat 7 is folded outwardly with the supplemental legs 8 resting upon the fioor. The ironing-board 10 is then inserted between the cross-bars 5 and 6, with its outerend resting upon the crossbar 9, connected to the upper ends of the legs 8 8.
The device is extremely simple in construction, can be cheaply made, and is a very useful article of kitchen furniture.
Having now described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a chair having a seat and supporting-legs, the rear supporting-legs extending upwardly and connected by a pair of cross-bars slightly separated one from the other, of a supplemental seat hinged to the seat of said chair, supplemental legs connected thereto, extended upwardly and connected by a cross-bar, and an ironing-board, one end of which is adapted to be inserted between said pair of cross-bars, and the outer end of which is adapted to rest upon the cross-bars connecting said supplemental legs, substantially as and for the purpose described,
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
