Attorney PHOTD-LITH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BARBER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM STORM MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,439, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed May 28, 1896- T 0 (1 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improvement in Pedal Attachments for .Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved toeclip attachment for the pedals of bicycles, which is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is an edge view of my improved attachment, the pedal to which the same is connected being indicated in outline and the manner of shifting the weight to balance the pedals being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the attachment.
A represents any ordinary form of pedal, and a the forward plate of the same, to which the toe-clip attachmentB is secured by means of a vbolt or screw f. This attachment is formed of sheet metal, from which it may be stamped in any ordinary or suitable design, so far as the toe-clip portion 6 is concerned, and the foot 0, through which the bolt f passes to secure it to the pedal, is similar to that of any sheet-metal clip, except that instead of terminating on the pedal-plate it is extended and bent rearward, so as to provide an arm 01 integral with the toe-clip, but ex tending back of the pedal-pin a. This arm at terminates in a weight 6, which is attached to the sheet metalin any manner preferred and the purpose of which is to permit the easy and accurate regulation of the center of Serial No. 593,414. (No model.)
gravity of the combined pedal and attachment, so as to cause them normally to assume a convenient position for applying the foot to the pedal. The weight e, as stated, is rigidly attached to the extremity of the arm d, and is designed to about maintain the pedal in horizontal position when close up to the rear portion of the pedal, as shown in full lines. If, however, it more than balances the weight of the toe-clip b c, or if it be desired that the pedal hang somewhat forward from a horizontal position, this result may be attained by merely bending the arm d either at the corner h or at a point '5 nearer the weight, so as to'throw it forward to a position indicated in dotted lines, the arm d being sufficiently yielding to permit such forcible change of shape.
I do not desire to claim, broadly, a counter balancing attachment in connection with the pedal and toe-clip of a bicycle; but
What I claim is- As a new article of manufacture a toe-clip adapted to be secured to a bicycle-pedal, having an integrally-formed bendable arm (1 with a rigidly-attached weight at the extremitythereof, whereby to regulate the normal position of the pedal substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. BARBER.
