To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST SCHUBERT, of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of wagons which have the main portion of the body between the axles depressed to a plane beneath the axles. v p The object of the invention is to providesuch wagons with ample and safe spring-supports for the body and at the same time couple the body securely to the axles, so as to relieve the springs from the strain incident to the draft exerted on the vehicle when in motion; and to that end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, andset forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a wagon embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the front portion of the wagon minus the wheels. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the central portion of the front axle with the spring and portion of the reach connected to said axle. Fig. 4: is an enlarged inverted plan view of the lower fifthwheel and its connection to the body of the wagon. Fig. 5 is a central vertical transverse section of the front axle and parts connected thereto, taken on line Y Y in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line X X in Fig. 5. Fig. 7is a vertical longitudinal section of the rear portion of the body and its connection to the axle, and Fig. 8 is a top plan view of one of the end portions of the rear axle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and A denote, respectively, the front and rear axles, and B the body, which latter has the portion between the axles depressed to a plane beneath said axles, as shown atB. The bottoms of the end portions, as well as the bottom of the depressed central portion, are horizontal, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
The body is supported on the axles by means of suitable interposed springs, preferably by an elliptic cross-spring O at the front end and by elliptic side springs C at the rear end. The front end of the body is connected to the top of the spring by means of a fifth-wheel D back of the spring. The top circle-plate of said fifth-wheel is secured to the bodyB, and the bottom circle-plate is'formed with a saddle S,,which rides on the top of the spring 0 and is fastened thereto by clips 11% in substantially the same manner as shown in my United at c and terminated with a bifurcation, thefree ends 0 of which are bent horizontally to lie on the under side of the top portion of the springs O, to which they are fastened by the clips 1' i, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In order to obtain a more positive hold on the front axle, so as to effectually couple the wagon-body to said axle, I attach to the axle or to the bolster cl thereof a vertical box (1, through which the vertical reach portion 0 passes, and is permitted to slide vertically therein and move with the spring in its vertical vibrations.
To prevent rattling, I apply to the inner sides of the box (2 a lining d of leather or other suitable material. The reach 0 extends also rearward from the circle-plate a, as shown at 0 and terminates with a reverse turned hook c, by which it engages the rear edge of a segmental plate P, which is concentric with the fifth-wheel B and is fastened to the under side of the depressed central portion B of the wagon-body, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Said hooked end portion 0 of the reach is allowed to freely slide lengthwise of the segmental plate and thus accommodate itself to the turning of the front axle. By hooking the reach on said segmental plate the kingboltb is greatly relieved from the draft of the reach.
The front end portion of the. body B and the bottom extension B are reinforced by braces e 6, attached to the central portion of the upright end of the depressed body portion 13 and extending forward and to one of the cross-barsf, by which the body is mounted on the upper fifthavheel, and to the top of the body extension 13 where it may be secured by the king-bolt b, as more clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The rear end of the body 13, I prefer to sup port on the rear axle A by means of elliptic side springs C, and in order to obtain a more positive connection of the body to said axle I employ two reaches 25 t, attached at one end to the depressed body portion B and at the opposite end to the rear end portion of the body, and form each of said reaches with an intermediate vertical portion 75', by which it slides in one of the vertical boxes Z, attached to the end portions of the axle A. These boxes I also line with leather or other suitable material Z to prevent rattling.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with the front axles and centrally-depressed body, of a spring supporting the front portion of the body on said axle, a fifth-wheel pivoted back of the axle and connected at opposite ends respectively to the spring and to the body and provided with a vertical intermediate portion sliding in a vertical box on the axle and thereby coupling said body longitudinally to the axle.
2. The combination with the front axle and the body formed with a depressed central portion, of a spring mounted on said axle, a fifthwheel pivoted back of said axle and connect-- in g the front portion of the body to the spring, a fifth-wheel on the depressed portion of the body, and a reach connecting the latter fifthwheel to the front running-gear and provided with an intermediate vertical portion sliding in a vertical box fixed to the front axle, as set forth.
3. The combination with the front axle, of the body formed with a depressed central portion and with a forward extension on the bottom of said depressed portion, aspring mounted on said axle, a fifth-wheel connected to the under side of the front portion of the body and supported on the spring, a fifth-wheel connected to the aforesaid forward extension of the bottom of the depressed portion of the body, a segmental plate secured to the under side of the body back of and concentric wit-h the lower fifth-wheel, a vertical box fastened to the front axle, and a reach connected to the king-bolt of said lower fifth-wheel and having its rear end hooked and sliding lengthwise on the aforesaid segmental plate, and the front end of said reach secured to the top portion of the spring and formed with an intermediate vertical portion sliding in the vertical box fixed to the axle, substantially as set forth and shown.
4. The combination with the body formed with a depressed central portion and the rear axle back of said depressed portion, springs supporting the rear portion of the body on said axle, reaches adjacent to the sides of the body and attached at opposite ends to the depressed portion and rear portion of the bod y and formed with intermediate vertical portions, and vertical boxes fastened to the rear axle and embracing the vertical portions of the reaches, as set forth.
5. In combination with the axles, the body formed with a depressed central portion and springs supporting said body, vertical boxes on the axles, reaches formed with vertical portions sliding in said boxes, and antirattling linings on the inner sides of said boxes, as set forth.
(5. In combination with the front runninggear, the wagon-bod y formed with a depressed central portion and with a forward extension of the bottom of said depressed portion, two fifth'wheels attached respectively to the front end portion of the body and to the aforesaid extension, and braces secured to the central portion of the upright end of the depressed body portion and extending forward and to the aforesaid portions of the wagon-body, as set forth.
