ALLEN OTIS HANEY, OF MILFORD, INDIANA.
G O V E R N O R SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,238, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed June 29,1896. Serial No. 597,500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN OTIS HANEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milford, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which .will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to governors principally designed for use in connection with pumps for pumping water or compressing air;
and its object is to provide an improved construction whereby when the air or water reaches a certain predetermined pressure in the tank or reservoir in which it is pumped or compressed the pump will cease operation and when the pressure is normal the pump will be again set in operation automatically. The pump will thus be alternately stopped and started as the pressure in the tank increases or diminishes, so that a continuous and uniform pressure will be maintained in the tank.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a longitudinal sectional view of a governor constructed according to my invention.
In the said drawing the numeral 1 designates a cylinder in which is located a piston 2, provided with a piston-rod 3, which passes through a stuffing-box 4 in the upper end of the cylinder and is connected with the shifting-bar of a clutch mechanism by a beltshifter or other means for throwing the pump into and out of operation. At each end of the cylinder is avalve-chamber 5 and 6, connected together by a vertical pipe 7, and communicating with these valve-chambers is a port 8 and 9 at opposite ends of the cylinders. Located in these valve-chambers are ordinary slide=valves 10 and 12, each having an exconnected together by means of a valve-rod l5, and so located thereon that when oneis open the other is closed.
Connected with the upper valve-chamber 5 is a small cylinder 15, in which is located a piston 16, secured to the valve-rod. The upper end of this cylinder is closed by means of a screw-cap or cover 17, provided with a central screw-threaded opening 18, through which passes a screw-threaded tube 19, provided with a head 20. The valve-rod passes through and works in this tube, and confined between the inner end of the tube and the piston 16 is a coiled regulating-spring 21. The valve-chamber5 is provided with an opening 23, connected by a pipe (not shown) with a closed tank or reservoir, into which water or air is pumped or compressed by the pump.
The operation is as follows: In normal condition the valve 10 is closed and valve 12 open by the pressure of the coiled spring, and the piston 2 is at the upper end of the cylinder 1, being elevated to this position by the pressure of the water or air in the closed tank or reservoir which will escape therefrom through the lower valve 12 and its port let into the said cylinder below the piston. In this position the pump will be thrown into working or operative condition. hen the pressure in the tank reaches a certain predetermined degree, which is regulated by means of the tube 19, the tension of the spring will be overcome and the piston 16 elevated, raisingthe valve-rod and opening valve 10 and closing valve 12. The air or water will now enter the upper end of the cylinder 1, depressing the piston 2 and exhausting at the lower end of the cylinder. This movement of the piston and piston-rod will stop the working of the pump until the pressure in the tank decreases or falls below the desired degree, when the tension of the spring will reverse the valves and again throw the pump into action. This operation will be repeated alternately, so that a uniform pressure will be maintained in the tank.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-- The combination with the cylinder having a port at each end, the piston located therein, the piston-rod, the valve-chambers communieating therewith, one of which is provided with an opening adapted to be connected with a closed storage-tank, the slide-valves and the valve-rod to which they are secured, of 5 the cylinder connected with one of the valvechainbers, the piston located therein and secured to the valve-rod, the screw-cap having a central screw-threaded opening, the tube engaging therewith through which the Valverod passes, and the coiled spring; substan- 1o tially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALLEN OTIS HANEY. Witnesses:
C. D. FOSTER, THos. A. CLAYTON.
