SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,796, dated February 23, 1897'.
Application filed October 12, 1896. Serial No. 608,623. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. THOMPSON,
.a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iatton, in the county of Traill and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to spark-arresters and draft-promoters for the furnaces of steamboilers; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists, essentially, in a smoke flue or pipe having a circular cupshaped receptacle near its upper end and a discharge-pipe with a semicylindrical rotatable wind-guard, having secured to its upper end on the concave side a downwardly-inclined shield of wire gauze or reticulated metal,the lower end of which is connected with a wind-vane, which is also secured to the windguard, and the lower side of the said guard provided with an outwardly-extending arm, upon which is supported an adjustable counterbalance-weight, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the smoke flue or stack of a steam-boiler furnace with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified construction, and Fig. 5 a detail elevation of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the smoke pipe or stack of a steam-boiler or furnace of any suitable construction, provided near its upper end with a disk or circular plate 2, provided with an upwardly-extending annular flange 3, forming a cup-shaped receptacle to receive sparks and cinders, as hereinafter described. This plate or disk is provided with a discharge-pipe 4, having a closing-plug 5, for drawing off the cinders or ashes which accumulate therein.
The numeral 6 designates a rotatable hub, mounted on said smoke-pipe, provided with radial arms 7 and a ring or rim 8. This hub is supported above the said receptacle by a collar 9, fixed to the smokepipe, and is also supported by a roller 11, journaled in an arm 11*. A similar collar 10, above the hub, holds the latter in place. Secured to the said ring is a vertical semicylindrical wind-guard 12, the upper end of which is beveled and has secured to it two downwardly-inclined converging arms 13, to which is secured a wind-vane 14. This wind-vane is also secured to the said hub and ring or rim.
The numeral 15 designates a wire-gauze or reticulated metal shield having a downward ly-extending flange 16 at its edges, which engages over the upper end of the wind-guard and also over the upper edges of the arms 13.
This shield inclines downwardly and at its lower end is provided with a lug 17, provided with eyes 18, with which engage hooks 19, pivotally connected with the wind-vane, by means of which the shield is held securely in place, but which can be readily removed for repairs or other purposes by disengaging the hooks from the eyes.
Upon the convex side of the wind-guard is secured an outwardly-extending arm 20, with which is connected a bail 21 of an adjustable counterbalanceweight 23.
The circular plate or disk which forms the bottom of the ash-receptacle is formed with a number of holes 24:, which allow for dust and ashes to escape, and one of the radial arms of the rotatable hub is provided with a downwardly-extending blade 25, which scrapes the ashes and dust into said holes as the hub and wind-guard are rotated. Larger cinders will be swept into the discharge-pipe 4,fro1n which they may be withdrawn by removing the plug 5.
The operation is as follows: When in use, 5
the wind striking the vane will hold the shield with the convex side toward the wind, so that the latter will pass around the same, drawing the smoke from the smoke-pipe with it and thus accelerating the draft. Any cinders or sparks issuing from the smoke-pipe will strike the shield and be precipitated into the spark-receptacle below.
The adjustable Weight serves as a counterbalance to the force of the Wind and keeps the Wind-guard in proper position, and by means of the Wind-vanes the said guard Will always present its convex side to the Wind.
As seen in Fig. 4, the Wind-guard is made angular instead of semicylindrical, and the Wire-gauze also extends down the same at each side, as seen in Fig. 5.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a Wind-guard and spark-arrester, the combination with the smoke-stack and the cup-shaped receptacle secured thereto, of the rotatable Wind-guard, the inclined Wiregauze or perforated shield, the wind-vane, and the adjustable counterbalance-weight; substantially as described.
2. The combination with the smoke-pipe, the cup-shaped receptacle, the rotatable hub and rim, of the rotatable guard, the Windvane secured thereto, the inclined perforated metal or Wire-gauze shield, the lug at the lower end thereof, the eyes, the pivoted hooks engaging therewith, and the adjustable counterbalance-Weight; substantially as described.
3. The combination With the smoke-pipe, the rotatable hub, the radial arms and ring, the Wind-vane secured thereto, and the cupshaped receptacle, of the Wind-guard, the downwardly-inclined arms secured thereto, and to the Wind-vane, the downWardly-inclined flanged shield engaging therewith, the lugs at the lower end thereof having eyes, the pivoted hooks engaging therewith, and the adjustable counterbalance-Weight; substantially as described.
4. The combination With the smoke-pipe, the rotatable hub, the radial arms and rim, the blade secured to one of said arms, and the wind-guard, Wind-vane and shield, of the cup-shaped receptacle having openings in the bottom, and a discharge-pipe provided Witha closing-plug; substantially as described.
