Description
(No Model.) I
H. A. PIKE.
MOLD. v No. 577,781. Patented Feb. 23, 1897.
Witnafises' I n van/tor NIT-E HENRY A. PIKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNITED STATES METALLIC PACKING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,781, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed May 3, 1895. Serial No. 548,043. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. PIKE, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Molds, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my invention is to construct a mold for making metallic packing-rings, either in a complete ring or a segment thereof. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved mold for making packing-rings. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the ring-segments which are placed in the mold when a segmental ring is to be made.
A is the body of the mold.
B is a movable core, circular in the present instance and of the contour of the inner portion of the packing-ring to be made. This core 13 is mounted on the end of a lever B, pivoted at b to lugs a on the under side of the body A of the mold. The lever B has a suitable handle by which the core B can be raised or lowered.
Adapted to a recess a in the body A is a ring D, having the contour of the outer portion of the packing-ring to be made. This ring-section D is made detachable, so that other rings may be substituted for it when necessary.
Pivoted to the upper face of the mold is a cover-plate E, having the pouring-opening e, which communicates with a space 00 between the core B and the ring-section D. This cover plate has a suitable handle E, by which it is turned to one side. The pivot e in the present instance is a stud projecting from the body A of the mold and has a nut e confine ing the cover-plate to the body. 7
On the body at one side is a stop 0, against which the cover-plate rests when in position, so as to insure the alining of the gate with the cavity so.
It will be noticed on referring to Figs. 1 and 3 that the wall 6 of the pouring-opening is inclined, forming a knife-edge at the bottom, so that after the ring has been molded the cover-plate can be moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, and the gate of the molded ring will be cut off clean by the coverplate.
When it is required to make a segment of a ring, for instance, one half of a ring, and so mold the segment that it will have a step bearing against the other half of the ring, I place in the mold a filling-piece I of the exact shape in cross-section of the space 00, and this filling-piece on one side has the upper portion 2' extending beyond the lower portion, and on the other side it is recessed at 71 for the reception of the extension on the other half of the ring, so that when the ring is molded one side will have a projection and the other a recess, forming an interlocking joint.
By making the filling-piece less than a halfcircle or more than a half-circle a ring will be molded equal to the balance of a complete circle, but in practice it is usual to make the ring in a complete circle or in a half-circle.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a mold for making packing-rings, of the body A, having a central opening and an annular recess, a ring D resting in said recess, a core 13 adapted to the central opening, a lever hung to the body and carrying the core B, a cover-plate E pivoted to the body and adapted to slide thereon, said plate having a pouring-opening communicating with the space between the rings D and cover B, substantially as described. V
2. The combination in a mold for making packing-rings, of the body A, having a central opening and an annular recess, a ring D resting in said recess, acore 13 adapted to the central opening, a lever hung to the body and carrying the core B, a segment I having notched ends resting in the space formed by the core and ring, a cover-plate E pivoted to the body and adapted to'slide thereon, said plate having a pouring-opening communicating with the space between the ring D, core B and segment I, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY A. PIKE.
