Description

J. STRANG.,
CLAMP (No Modell) Patented Feb. 23, 189% wue/m l o a W v mom 7 Nrrn TATES ATENT Fries,
J-OI-IN'STRANG, OF QUEBEC, CANADA.
CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,669, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed June 3, 1896. Serial N0- 594=,081. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN STRANG, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Quebee, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to woodworkers clamps, and more particularly to a clamp for holding a block of wood being operated on to construct the hull of a toy boat.
My object is to provide an improved, simple, and cheap clamp adapted to hold a block of wood While being shaped into a toy boathull, so that the hands of the operator will be free for use.
The invention consists of certain novel features and combinations appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View, and Fig. 4 a perspective view showing the shield removed and used as a cover.
A designates a base preferably of rectangular form. A holder B is secured to this base by screws. (Not shown.) This holder or box is a rectangular structure having three sides securely fastened together and to the base, but one of its ends 1 is removable, being connected to the sides of the holder by angle- irons 2 and 3.
One of the sides of the holder is provided with sets of upper and lower screw-threaded openings 4: and 5, located near the ends of the box. Adjustable thumb-screws 6 and 7 operate in these openings. A thumb-screw 8 passes through the removable end 1.. A triangular brace 9 has its smaller base connected to the front end of the box and extends the entire width thereof.
The base A is provided with a triangular notch 10,which extends the width of the holder and is immediately beneath the brace J.
The numeral 11 designates an inclined shield. which is of approximately the same width as the holder and has its lower beveled end snugly received in the notch in the base. The base is also provided with a notch 12, which receives the lower end of a handle 13,
whose upper end is adjustably connected to the shield by a screw 14:, which fits looselyin the handle, butis threaded through the shield. By adjusting the screw the shield may be held snug against the upwardly-inclined face of the triangular brace 9.
The shield is slightly narrower than the holder, so that when it is removed itmay he slid in grooves 14: in the holder and, in connection with a slide 11, be used as a cover therefor, so that the whole device can be made into compact form.
The invention is used in the following manner: The block of wood is placed in the holder and the thumb-screws adjusted to clamp it in position. The lines of the hull having been marked on the block, the workman grasps the handle 13 with his left hand and manipulates the gouge or chisel with his right hand. If it is desirable that both hands be free, the end of the base may be pressed against some fixed object. After the upper portion of the hull has been finished the thumb-screws may be taken out and placed in the lower openin gs and the block removed, turned over, and replaced, so that the bottom of the hull and the keel can be formed. If the block is longer than the holder, the removable end can be taken off and only the side thumb-screws employed. In any event it will be observed that the shield protects the hand from injury occasioned by slipping of the tool when the handle is used. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a woodworkers clamp, the combination with a holder and clamping devices for securing the work in the holder, of a handle, and a shield therefor, substantially as described.
2. In a woodworkers clamp, the combination with a holder and clamping devices for securing the work in the holder, of a handle, and an upwardly-inclined shield therefor, substantially as described.
3. In a woodworkers clamp, the combination with a base, of a holder and means for clamping the work therein, an upwardly-inclined shield connected to the base, and a handle protected by said shield, substantially as described.
4. In a woodworkers clamp, the combination with a base, of a holder and means for specification in the presence of two subscribclamping the Work therein, an npwardly-ining Witnesses.
clined shield, a brace interposed between the shield and the holder, and a handle interposed JOHN STRANG' 5 between the base and the shield, substan- WVitnesses:
tially as described. A. G. OUELLET,
In testimony whereof I have signed this J. F. DAGNEAU.
