CHALK-SHAFPENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,548, dated February 23, 1897.

mortise through it, a V-shaped knife mounted under said lid and extending into and more or less filling said mortise, the lower end of said groove being closed by a transverse wall, and a hole through said lid being provided at the foot of said wall. A suitable rack for holding pieces of chalk is also provided at one end of said body. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof. A is a suitable body comprising a bottom 2, side walls 3, ends at, and an intermediate crosswall 5. A cover 6 is suitably hinged to said body in such manner asto close the opening or top of the box between the wall 5 and one end. Other cross-walls 7 create a series of pockets to receive and hold pieces of chalk. A longitudinal groove 8, substantially V- shaped in cross-section, is created upon the top of said cover in any suitable manner, as by securing parallel strips thereon, the lower end being closed by a wall 9, at the foot of which is a hole 10 through said cover. At a suitable point a mortise 11 is cut through said cover, being also partly in the walls of said groove, and 12 is a knife or cutter having laterals 13, creating an arrow-head, said laterals inclining upward and laterally and substantially parallel with the walls of said groove,

Fig. 5 is a beyond which they slightly project, presenting inclined cutting edges. Thus when a piece of chalk is placed in the top of said groove and drawn down the point of the knife first begins to cut, cutting off the sides to create a V edge thereon, and then the edges of the laterals cut higher and higher up onto the sides. Also the point of the knife cuts out first at the upper end of the chalk, the outer ends of the laterals cutting out last, whereby all slivering or breaking off of particles is prevented. All of the cuttings fall into the box.

The wall 9 stops the chalk and prevents any dust from getting out onto the table or cloth, all of it passing through the hole 10 into the box.

The inclination of the trough operates to prevent the device from sliding around upon the table or cloth when in use.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1'. A challcsharpener comprising a box, an inclined cover therefor, a groove in or upon said cover, a mortise through said cover and partly in the walls of said groove, and an arrow-headed cutter, the cutting edges of which project through said mortise and beyond the walls of said groove.

2. A chalk-sharpener comprising a box, an inclined cover therefor, parallel bars secured thereon creating a V-shaped groove between them, a stop-wall at the bottom of said groove a hole through said cover at the foot of said wall, a mortise through said cover and the walls of said groove, an arrow-headed cutter extending through said mortise and presenting cutting edges within the walls of said groove.
