RETAINER OR GUIDE FOR HAT-PINS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,491, dated February 23, 1897.

Be it known that I, EMMA QUEEN AMELIA MONUTT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Amherst, in the county of Cumberland and Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retainers or Guides for Hat- Pins, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fastening devices for the hair, which are adapted to be used in connection therewith for retaining the hat in position upon the head, said fastening device being adapted to be connected with the hair and to receive a hat-pin which is inserted through the hat in the usual manner.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which similar numerals of reference designate the same parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is'a plan view of my improved fastening device; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 an end view looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device which preferably comprises three parallel rods or bars 5, the ends of which at one end are curved downwardly, as shown at 6, and projected, as shown at 7, and connected by a cross-rod 8, which is provided at each end with upwardly and inwardly directed arms 9; and the opposite ends of the parallel rods or bars 5 are curved downwardly and formed into eyes 10, and I also provide a wire loop 11, the ends of which are pivotally connected with the eyes 10 and the parallel rods or bars 5 by a pivot or hinge pin 12, andthe sides 13 of the loop 11 are adapted to enter the spaces between the parallel rods or bars 5, and said loop projects beyond the end of said rods or bars 5 opposite the pivotal or hinge connection at 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in practice the sides of the loop are contracted and forced between the upwardly and inwardly directed arms 9, by which said loop is held in the position shown in the drawings.

Secured to the separate sides 13 of the loop 11 is an upwardly-directed yoke 14:, which is provided at its upper end with a depending central portion 15, in which an eye 16 is formed, and in practice my improved fastening device is connected with the hair at one side of the head or at the back thereof by passing the loop 11 therethrough and then securing it between the arms 9, as shown in the drawings, after which the hat is placed in position on the head and the hat-pin is inserted therethrough in the usual manner and through the eye 16 in the yoke 14, or said pin maybe simply passed through said yoke, and when the parts are thus connected the hat will be securely held on the head.

This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and in practice I prefer to construct the same of spring-wire,though other material may be employed.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described fastening device which is adapted to be connected 'with the hair, said device consisting of parallel rods or bars which are provided at one end with upwardly and inwardly directed arms, and to the opposite ends of which is hinged a loop which projects beyond said arms, said loop being also provided with an upwardly-directed yoke, through which a hat-pin is adapted to be inserted, substantially as shown and described.

2. A retainer or guide for hat-pins consisting of three parallel rods, eyes formed at one end of the said rods,a pivot or hinge pin passed through said eyes, a cross-head secured to the opposite ends of said rods, upwardly and inwardly directed arms secured to said crosshead, a wire loop mounted on said pivot-pin and projecting in an opposite direction beyond said cross-head and an upwardly-directed yoke mounted on said loop, all of the said parts being combined substantially as described.
