Be it known that I, GARDNER P. HASTINGS, of Springfield, in the county of .Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrips non.

A further object of the invention is to provide a means whereby a better bearing of the slide action upon the hammer will be obtained than heretofore for cocking the said hammer, and, furthermore, to construct the firing-pin in two sections, one of which is located in the breech-block and'is adapted to strike the shell, the other section, which is adapted to receive the impact of the hammer, being placed in a recoil locking-block occupying such position during the extracting of a shell and the loading of the cartridge-chamber as to carry the breech-section of the firing-pin entirely outof the path of the hammer, the breech-section of the firing-pin being brought into concerted action only with the other seotion when the cartridge is fully within the cartridge-chamber andall parts are in position for firing A further object of the invention is to pro vide a magazine which may be expeditiously and conveniently secured to or detached from c the gun, and one which may be loaded when the parts of the gun are in firing position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

The firing-pin is made in two parts or sections, an exploding-section G to engage the primer of the cartridge and an actuating part or section G alined with the section G and actuated by the hammer. The exploding-section G is carried by a breech-block H,
mounted for. movement longitudinallyin the. frame with the section G, alined with the axis of the barrel, while the section G of the firing-pin is carried in a recoil locking-block- .H', arranged to move transversely to the path of the breech-block. The locking-block H serves, when the arm is'cocked, to lock the breech block in place and hold the same against movement under the recoil of the dis charge. A The breech-block H comprises a body portion 46, having pins 47 at opposite sides, en-
gaging slots 48. formed longitudinally in thearms 42 and 42 of the slide action, and provided at its lower and upper parts with rearwardly-exte'nding arms or bars 49 and 50, the lower arm 49 sliding on the top of the partition 33. The arms or bars 49 and 50 are connected at their rear ends by a tie-block 51, forming the back of the breech-block.
At the rear end of the breech-block an opening 52 is made, and at the forward central portion of the breech-block an opening 53 is produced. The exploding-section of the firingpin has free movement in both of these openings, but is provided with a head 54, or is otherwise enlarged where it passes through the rear of the breech-block and the said explodingsection of the firing-pin is'encircled by a spring 55, having bearing against the shoulder formed by the head 54 and againstthe body portion of theoreech-block, so. that when the firing-pin is struck from the rear and forced out beyond the front face of the breech-block into contact with the primer of a cartridge .the spring 55 will be placed under tension and will act to return the said sect-ion of the firing-pin to its normal position.
The breech-block is preferably provided with a plate 56, secured to its top portion and adapted to strengthen the same, and the said plate is-carried rearward a predetermined distance beyond .the breech-blockj but if in practice it is found desirable the rear extension may be an integral portion of the breechblock. This rear extension, and, in fact, the major portion of the breech-block, is adapted to pass beneath a stirrup K, which is firmly secured within the frame at the rear of the partition 33, extending from the top. of the frame downward and comprising a top bar 66, two side bars 67, and a bottom bar 68. A slot 56 is made in the frame at the upper portion thereof near the stock and is adapted to receive the upper portion of the breechblock and its' rear extension when. the breechblock'is carried back to admit of the extractionof ashell; and the slot 56" is normally covered by a spring cap or cover 56", which is secured to the top of the stirrup at one of its ends,- being free at the other, so that when the breech-block is carried back the spring-cap will be pressed upward, as shown in Fig. 3.

As the arms Hand 42 of the slide action continue their rearward movement, carrying with them the breech-block H, the left-hand arm 42 will engage with the hammer 35 and carry the same to the full-cocked position, and at the time that the breech-block has reached its full rear position the clamping-lever 62 will have struck the topof the stirrup K and will have disconnected the inner or clamping head 65 of the said lever from the flange of the shell of the cartridge drawn from the barrel by theextract-or, and at that momentthe right-hand 'arm 42 of the slide actionwill have been brought to an engagement with a lug 102, (shown particularly in Figs. 4 and 9,) located on the right-hand side of the pawl 97, and the said pawl will be lifted and the spring 100 will then exert its full tension ina downwardly direction onthe rear end of the carrierlever 82, forcing the forward end of the said lever upward, which will carry with it the carrier L and the loaded shell in said carrier, causing the loaded shell in the carrier to'so forcibly strike the empty shell just extracted from the barrel as to throw the said shell from the chamber E. As the carrier ascends when re leased from engagement with the bottom plate 22 thespring 88 of the carrier will act to draw and when the bottom plate 22 has reached its full upward movement at its inner end, as
shown in Fig. 3, the link 94 will exert such downward tension on the lug 87 of the lefthand or lipped jaw of the carrier as to draw this portion of the jaw downward, firmly looking the jaws in their closed position, sincethis downward tension on the forward portion of the carrier will prevent the jaws from being forced outward against the tension of the spring 88 by the inertia of the cartridge carried in the carrier. At this time the forward end of the cartridge will be within the barrel, and as the cartridge is further carried forward by the forward movement of the breecl1-block the lever 82, connected with the carrier, will be proportionately depressed and the jaws of the carrier, upon the downward pressure brought upon the said carrier, will be forced outward against the tension of the carrier-spring 88 and will release the cartridge. In the further forward movement of. the breech-block the cartridge will be placed in position in the barrel, the clamping-lever 62, bycontact with the project-ion 6i, as shown in Fig. 7, will hai e its clamping-head forced to a clamping engagement with the upper rim edge of the cartridge, and the loaded cartridge will then be held to the breech-block by the extractor and the clamping-lever. means to lock the jaws of the carrier against opening when the carrier reaches its uppermost position, and means to release the aws of the carrier when the breech-block is moved toward the barrel, substantially as set forth.

firing-pin, a hammer, a carrier arranged to move in the chamber of the frame to carry the cartridges from the magazine to the barrel, the carrier having clamping-jaws to hold the cartridge upon the upward movement of the carrier, means to open the jaws when the carrier is opposite the magazine, means to move the carrier upward when the breechblock is retracted to eject the empty shell, and means to lock the jaws against movement when the carrier reaches its uppermost position, said breech-blockbeing arranged when moved toward the barrehto release the-carrier jaws and permitthe cartridgeto be pushed into the barrel, substantially as set forth.
