EXTINGUISHER FOR LAMP OR OIL-STOVE BURNERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,944, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed February 2'7, 1895. Serial No. 539,910. (No model.) Patented in England November 27, 1894,1lo. 23,028.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BRANDON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Aston, near Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Extinguishers for Lamp or Oil-Stove Burners, (for which British Letters Patent No. 23,023 were issued November 27, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.

The invention has for its object improvements in or connected with that class of extinguishers for lamp and oil-stove burners in which a pair of hinged shutters or 'fiaps are employed; and the invention consists of improved a-nd simple means of mounting and operating such extinguisher shutters or flaps so that they are normally held free of the burners, but are readily operated to extinguish the flame, as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of a burner and extinguisher without its cone. Figs. 2 and 3 are two end views showing the extinguisher out of action and in action. Fig. 4 is a plan view. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of parts onthe line indicated, showing one of the stops at the ends of the burner to limit the outward motion of the extinguisher flaps or shutters; and Fig. 6 is a similar cross-section to that shown by Fig. 5 with the addition of the extinguisher flaps or shutters resting against the said stop.

In all the figures like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a is the wicktube, and b the perforated diaphragm, which may be of any ordinary character.

The extinguisher consists of apair of shutters or flaps e, the axes e of which are each mounted in bearings 9 fixed to the diaphragm b, but not touching the wick-tube a. Each axle c has a cranked end or arm 6 I connect to the ends of the arms a by means of yokes 6 a bow-spring e", which acts to keep the shutters or flaps e normally free of the flame and resting against the stops 9, which are fixed at the ends, but clear of the wick-tube a. By pressing together the ends of the spring 6 and consequently the ends of the arms e the extinguisher shutters or flaps e are made to act, as shown at Fig. 3, and by liberating such parts the shutters or flaps e are by the action of the spring caused to return to the position shown at Figs. 1, 2, and 6.

Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- An extinguisher for lamp and oil stove burners comprising a wick-tube a, a perforated diaphragm b, bearings e fixed to the diaphragm, contiguous to the wick-tube, the axes 6 having crank-arms c and flaps e, the single bow-string e the yokes e connecting the ends of the bow-spring with the crank arms, and the stops g; substantially as described.
