SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,911, dated February 9, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. STERRIT, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Bath-.

Tub Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end portion of a bath-tub provided with my improved support. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line III III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail bottom plan view of the lugs on the bath-tub, the supports being shown in section; and Fig. 5 is a detail section of the joint and connection.

My invention relates to the separable supports employed for bath-tubs and is designed to afford a new and improved device of this character which will clamp itself automatically upon the tub and hold the same securely in place.

In the drawings, 2 represents the bath-tub, having upon its sides short longitudinal ribs 3, arranged to enter grooves in the adjust able supports, so as to hold the tub in place. The support consists of two similar castings 4 4, which are hinged to a common bolt 5. At the joint each casting is provided with a curved semicircular extension 6, having an arc-shaped slot 7, with which engages a lug 8 upon the other casting, and from the extension 6 the end of each casting is cut away or inclined, as shown, to allow a slight play of the parts about the joints. Below the joint the parts are provided with lugs 9,

- having projecting pins 10, which are in line with each other and serve to hold in place the spiral spring 11, which abuts against the lugs and acts to swing the parts upon the hinge-bolt and close their upper portions upon the tub. Above the joint each part is provided with flanges 12, these flanges being parallel with each other and of the same length, as shown in Fig. 4, and having inserted therein cushions or pads 13, which contact with the tub and prevent its longitudinal movement within the supports.

Above the joint of the support the tub is provided with two transversely-extending' flanges 12, thus rigidly securing the tub to the support. The sides of this key are preferably tapered slightly, so as to give a dovetail action, which will prevent the loosening or displacing of the key. To hide the hingejoint of each support, I provide on its outer face the ornamental piece 16, through which the hinge-bolt 5 passes, as shown in Fig. 3.

The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since the support clamps itself automatically upon the tub, the spring causing the part-s to engage the ribs upon the tub, while a rigid and secure fastening is alforded by means of the coacting lugs and flanges.

Many variations in the form and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from my invention, since What I claim is-- 1. A bath-tub support comprising twosimilar parts which are hinged together, and a spring arranged to act upon the parts to clamp them upon the tub, substantially as described.

2. A bath-tub support consisting .of two similar parts hinged together and having recesses arranged to engage side ribs upon the tub, and a spring arranged to act upon the parts to clamp them in position, substantially as described.

3. A bath-tub support consisting of two parts hinged together, each part having arcshaped slots engaged by a lug upon the other part, substantially as described.

4. A bath-tub support consisting of two similar parts hinged together, each-part having an arc-shaped slot engaged by a lug upon the other part and a spring arranged to clamp the parts upon the tub, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a bath-tub, havin gdepending lugs, of a support consisting of two separate similar parts connected together, said parts having flanges arrranged to be clamped between the lugs upon the tub, substantiaily as described.

6. The combination with a tub having transverse depending1ugs,- of a support consisting of two similar parts hinged together, each part having flanges, and a key arranged to clamp said flanges between the lugs upon the tub, substantially as described. 10
