Be it known that we, HANS GEORGE W'IL- LIAM GARsTENs and HANS FREDRICK PETERS, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Egg- Testers, of which the following specification contains a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, forming part thereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective of our improved egg-tester. section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig, 3 is a similar View on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Our invention relates to that classof eggtesters in which there is a casing provided with an aperture for the egg and a source of light.

The object of the invention is to provide an egg-tester of the class referred to which shall be reliable, simple,- and inexpensive in its construction and which may be readily taken apart for cleaning.

The invention will rst be described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A represents the lamp-bowl, provided with a suitable burner B, and O is the lamp-chimney. Upon the upper side of the bowl A are formed or secured parallel guideways A A at opposite sides of the burner.

Dis a metallic casing having its front closed, except where it is apertured to receive an egg, as shown at d, and having its rear side open. This casing D is mainly c 7lindrical and is formed at its open under si e With parallel vertical sides D D', the lower edges of which are flanged, as at d', to slide in the guideways A A.

The rear open end of the cylindrical portion of the casing D is closed byaremovable cap A?, provided with a knob a2, but the end of the casing below this cap is open, so as to afford ready access to the wick-operating shaft of the burner and provide foradmission of air to the burner.

The top of the casing D is provided directly above the burner with a chimney-aperture A3, down through which the chimney may be inserted and removed. This chimney B is Fig. 2 is a central vertical cross` larger atits bottom than at its top, and hence the loose cover E is provided to close the said aperture A3 around the chimney and keep the light from passing therethrough. The said cover E is free to slide on top of the casing, so that the chimney may always stand perpendicular without any nice adjusting of the casing D.

F is an opaque tube formed of metal or 6o other` suitable material and surrounding the lamp-chimney, so as to still further prevent the escape of light, and this tube may simply rest at its lower end on the cover E or it may be secured thereto in any suitable manner.

G is a vertical reflector substantially semicircularvor U shape and mounted at its lower edge in one of the chimney-retaining prongs on the burner, so that its front edges will approach near'to or Contact with the closed 7o front end of the casing D, while its upper end lies close to the top of said casing, and thus the light from the burner cannot escape from around the reflector, but will all be reiiected toward the egg-opening d. Thus a powerful light will be afforded and it will not be necessary to use the tester in a dark room, but it may be used successfully in any room or place.

The casing D will not become highly heated and injure the eggs, as would be the tendency where simply a metallic chimney was applied to a lamp-burner in lieu of its glass chimney 9o and provided with an egg-aperture. The heated air Within the casing is free to escape upwardly through the opaque tube F, and overheating is thereby prevented.

What We claim is- 9 5 l. An egg-tester, comprising a lamp, a removable bottomless casing mounted to slide horizontally on and off the lamp-bowl and inclosing the burner; said casing having an vided with means for closing its open rear end, substantially as set forth.

and a removable opaque tube surrounding the chimney above the top of the easing, substantially as described.

An egg-tester,consistingin the lamp provided with parallel guideways on its bowl, and a easing having iianges or guides at its lower edges working in said guideways to permitit to be slid on and off of the bowl; the l the front of the casing being provided with an egg-opening, the top having a Chimneyopening and the back provided with a removable eap, a reflector mounted on the burner with its vertical i' ront edges extending toward the front of the casing, an opaque tube surrounding the chimney, and a cover-flange at the lower end of said tube and resting loosely on top of the easing, substantially as dcscribed.
