.l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VITAL ALFRED EMOND, OF QUEBEC, CANADA.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,778, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed April 22, 1896. Serial No. 588,547. (No model.) Patented in Canada July '7, 1893, No. 43,528.
To all whom t may concern.:
Beit known that I, VITAL ALFRED EMoND, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city of Quebec, in the district of Quebec and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, (for which I have obtained a patent in Canada, dated July 7, 1893, No. 43,5235). and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lubricators for use in connection with piston-rods and other longitudinally-slidable rods and may also be used on revolving shafts.
This invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view l of the lubricator, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same from below.
Ais a back plate, of brass or other approved material, provided with a semicircular notch a at its lower part, which fits over the top side of the piston-rod.
B is a wedge-shaped front plate provided with a similar semicircular notch b and inclined sides b'. The sides b are provided with flanges c, which are secured to the back plate A. The said plates together form a chamber which is filled with absorbent material C, such as felt. i
D is a lid pivoted at one end by the pin CZ to the top of one of the sides b. The other end of the lid is provided with a spring-catch D', which engages with a scroll d' at the top of the other side b. l
Oil or other lubricant is poured onto the felt and slowly descends onto the piston-rod. The felt can be packed down in the chamber as often as requisite to keep it in contact with the piston-rod.
E are the holes for the bolts of the pistonrod stuffing-box.
When the lubricator is applied to a revolving shaft, it may be secured to the shaft-bearing by means of bolts passing throughA the holes E. The lubricator may also be secured to the gland of a stuffing-box bythe stuffingbox bolts; but, if desired, it may be clamped to the stufling-box gland.
The back plate preferably has a curved upper edge, andFis a curved flange projecting rearwardly from the said edge and conforming to the shape of the upper part of the flange on the gland.
G is a band which encircles the flange of the gland and bears on the fiange F. The band G is provided with lugs g at its ends, and g is a bolt which draws together the said lugs and clamps the lubricator to the gland.
l. The combination with the rod to be lubricated, of a lubricant-chamber, having a filling-opening and -an opening contiguous to said rod, said chamber comprising a back plate forming the rear wall thereof, the front plate, the body thereof forming the front wall of said chamber, the side edges of said front plate being turned inwardly to form the side walls of said chamber, the edges of the turnedin portions being bent laterally and bolted to the back plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a piston-rod and stuffing-box, of a back plate having a lubricant-chamber formed on the face thereof, a flange extending from the back of the same, said flange being adapted to rest upon the upper periphery of the gland and a band adapted to embrace the lower periphery of the gland with means for securing said band in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
