SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 576,771, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed September 18, 1896. Serial No. 606,234. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN MELVIN ADAMS, residing at Fort Ann, in the county of Washington and State of New- York, have invented a new and Improved Combination Memorandum -Book, Paper-Cutter, Blotter, Envelop- Opener, Stamp and Pencil Holder, of which the following is a specification.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination device in which the upper part thereof is formed from a single blank of sheet metal.

Vith these various objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts and also in their novel combination of arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a partof this specification, Figurel is a view showing the application of my invention, the top or memorandum-book face of the device being shown uppermost. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device complete, the memorandum-book, pencil, and blotter being removed for clearness of illustration. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device, the lower or blotter face of the device deing shown uppermost. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the upper left-hand corner, clearly illustrating the paper-cutter, envelop-opener, and stamp-holder. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken through the stamp-holder, the blotter being omitted. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken through the pencil-holder, the memorandumbook, pencil, and blotter being arranged in their proper positions. 7

In carrying out my invention I employ a blank A, of thin sheet metal, essentially rectangular in form, one edge B being folded over to provide a binding-clasp for the memorandum-book or writing-tablet O, composed of a series of leaves perforated near their inner ends along the line of the overturned edge B, whereby they can be readily torn oif as desired. Upon the opposite edge of the blank A is produced a roll D, which forms the pencil holder, the pencil E being slipped therein from either end.

Integral ears F are struck from the overlapping edge B and the rolled edge D, said integral ears being turned under the blank A, as most clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 6, for the purpose of retaining the blotting-pad G upon the opposite face of the blank A, there being preferably fou r of such pads, each having the calendar of three months printed thereon.

By punching the ears F from the overlapping edge B and the rolled edge D sufficient metal is removed from the said edges B and D to permit the proper adjustment of the memorandum-book and the pencil into and out of the said binding-clasp and holder.

The upper end of the blank A is formed with a sharp straight edge H, which serves the purpose of a paper-cutter, and near the said upper end the left-hand side of the blank is cut away, as shown at I, in order to provide an envelop opener K, which can be readily inserted beneath the flap of an envelop for the purpose of tearing the same open.

A rectangular-shaped box L is arranged upon the upper face of the blank, near the upper end, for the purpose of containing postagestamps, matches, and the like, said box being made exceedingly shallow and provided with a hinged cover L, adapted to fit close upon the said shallow box.

It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and durable combination device embodying in a compact and convenient manner all of the articles hereinbefore mentioned, and it will furthermore be noticed that, owing to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, they each aid each other and do not interfere therewith in the least.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. 111 a combination device of the kind described, a sheet-metal blank, having the opposite edges turned over upon the top of the said blank, the left-hand edge being adapted to hold the inemorandun1book,the right-hand edge being adapted to hold the pencil, the integral ears punched from the said turn ed-over edges, and bent beneath the blank pads held by the said integral ears, the upper end of the blank being cut out to provide an envelopopener at the corner, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a combination of the kind described, a sheet-metal blank having a straight upper edge, one edge being cut away near the said JOHN MELVIN ADAMS.
