Description
NITED STATES ERNEST P. LORCII, OF NEIV YORK, I.
PATENT OFFICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,370,
dated February 2, 1897.
Application filed April 8, 1896. Serial No, 586,885. (Specimens) faces, such as casings, base-moldings, pictureframe strips, specification.
My invention consists in the combination of a suitable fibrous pulp, such, for instance, as is used for making paper, with the desired abrading substance, such as pulverized glass, sand, silica, corundum, or other similar substances, and then adding thereto some adhesive matter, such as flou r paste, gum-arabic, or glue, which is Worked into a suitable dough &c., of which the following is a or pulp and is then to be worked into the desired sheets, the'surfaces of whichare to be smoothed.
I11 practice I take any suitable material, such as ordinary paper-pulp, Wood-pulp, strawboard, or paper-stock, softened by Water and macerated, and to this is added the desired abrading substance of the degree of fineness and quantity varying with th e quality of the material which is to be made. The mass is then thoroughly agitated in a convenient vessel until the ahrading substances are evenly incorporated in the pulp, and then the superfluous water is expelled by pressure or otherwise. Then a suitable adhesive ma terial, such as flour paste, gum-arable, or thin glue, depending upon the grade of the material which it is desired to make, is added to the mass. After adding this adhesive matter the mass is to be thoroughly worked into a dough, adding thereto dry flour, pulverized soapstone, or talc until it is of suitable consistency to be formed or rolled into thin sheets of the desired thickness, that is, from about a thirty-second part of an inch upward, in order to adapt the same to be placed side by side, so that the edges will make a body to conform to and cover the irregular surfaces on which these sheets are intended to be used for polishing, and then dried in any convenient manner. The surfaces of the sheets are then to be finished smoothly, and for this purpose I employ a suitable finishing substance which may be applied to the surface. For this purpose soapstone, talc, or plumbago may be applied in the process of rolling out or finishing the sheets, and this gives them a smooth finished surface, so that they will not stick together, but may be adjusted edgewise to conform to the irregular surfaces upon which it is desired to use the same. Before the sheets are thoroughly dry and hardened they should be cut to the dimensions desired.
Sheets of such material made according to this my invention are adapted to be adjusted in position edgewise to conform to the face of irregular surfaces and then, when suitably clamped or fastened together in such position, can be used edgewise for polishing or I abracling the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sheet of abrading material made of pulp with an abrasive incorporated therein, and having a non-adhesive finishing substance applied to its surface to prevent the sheets from stiekin g together, substantially as described.
