SAFETY-HOLDER FOR BURNING SULFUR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,196, dated February 2, 1897'.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Holders for Burning Sulfur, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The objects of my improvement are to provide a light and inexpensive receptacle, preferably of sheet metal and formed of a single piece thereof, in which sulfur can be lighted and burned and thus transformed into fumes or vapors, used as disinfectants 0r insecticides, without danger of subjecting the floor, carpet, or object upon which the receptacle containing the burning sulfur may be placed to any high temperature, and also preventing the overflow of said burning sulfur upon the floor, &c. I attain these objects by the construction of the receptacle illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a safety sulfur-holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical central section of the same.

In said drawings the holder is shown as made of a circular disk of sheet metal pressed in suitable dies, the central portion being pressed down to constitute a pan A, the edges a of which are turned down to form the inner walls b of an annular well B, the bottom 12 of which is on a lower level than the bottom of the pan to form an air-chamber (1 under said pan. The sheet metal of the safety-holder is turned upward from the bottom 19 of the well to form the outer wall 12 of said well, and said wall is extended to a level, preferably higher Serial No. 507,053. (No modelJ than the upper edge a of the pan A. The upper edge of the wall 12 is preferably turned outwardly and bent upon itself to stiffen. and strengthen it and also improve its appearance.

The well B is intended to contain a sufficient amount of water to extinguish any melted sulfur that may overflow the edge a of the pan.

Within the pan A there is represented in Fig. 2 in dotted outline a block of sulfur or fumigator F, prepared and inolosed as stated in Patents Nos. 499,324 and 499,325, granted to me June 13, 1893.

Although I prefer to have this safety-holder constructed of sheet metal on account of its lightness and strength, it is evident that I could make it of crockery or earthenware of substantially the same form without departing from the spirit of my invention, and also that said holder may be elliptic or polygonal in place of round.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim- A-safety-holder for burning disinfectants consisting of a pan supported by an encircling annular well integral therewith, the bottom of said pan being on ahigher level than the bottom of the annular well, and the outer edge of said well being on a higherlevel than the upper edge of the pan, substantially as described.
