\VILLIAM K. JAGGER, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-=POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,128, dated February 2, 1897. Application filed April 18, 1896. Eerial No. 588,105. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. J AGGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Posts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in tool-posts for slotting-machines, the object of the same being to provide a device of this kind which will enable the tool to be held securely in place and to be adjusted at any angle to the work that may be desired.
In all devices of this character which have preceded the present one great difficulty has arisen by reason of the fact that it is necessary to take the tool from its clamp or detach the post from the machine in order to change the angle for the purpose of cutting along two edges of a sheet of metal. I obviate these difficulties by my invention, which consists of a tool-post made up of two main parts, one of which is generally rectangular in form, is bored out longitudinally, and has passing through it the spindle of a head-piece or clamp through a lateral slot, in which the tool is adapted to be inserted. The upper end of the spindle is screw-threaded and hasa nut passing around it, by means of which the head and the lower end of the tool-post are adapted to be drawn together. The said lower end of the tool-post proper is formed with an octagonal recess, into which fits a similarly-shaped shoulder on the lower end of the spindle. By this means the head-piece carrying the tool maybe adjusted to any desired angle within certain limits to the work and be rigidly held in such adjusted position.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the head-piece and its spindle, showing the lateral slot therein. .Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the tools.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My tool-post is made up of the post proper, 1, which is rigidly secured to an operative part of the slotting-machine and has a reciprooating movement imparted to it thereby. This post is preferably rectangular in shape, is bored out longitudinally, and is formed at its lower end with a polygonal depression or recess 2. In the drawings this recess 2 is shown octagonal in shape, but it is obvious that any desired form may be employed. The head-piece 3 acts in engagement with the post 1, is provided with a spindle 4:, extending upwardly through the post 1, and has screw-. threads 5 upon its upperouterend. The head 3 is formed with a shoulder 6 and a lateral slot 7, through which a tool 8 is adapted to be inserted. Between the shoulder 6 and the spindle l the said head-piece 3 is formed with a polygonal enlargement 9 of the same shape as the depression 2 in the post 1, the said enlargement of the head-piece and said depression permitting the angular adjustment of the head-piece 3 relative to the post 1.
In using my device the shank. of the tool 8 is inserted through the slot 7 and a nut 10, screwed down upon-the upper end of the spindle 4. The edge of the said tool 8 projects slightly above the shoulder 6, so that it is brought into engagement with the lower end of the post 1. By screwing the nut 10 tightly upon the end of the spindle 4 the tool is clamped firmly in place.
In case it is desired to cut an angle at right angles to that in which the tool has been'used it is only necessary to loosen the nut 10, push down the head-piece 3 by its spindle 4, turn said head-piece through an arc of ninety degrees, and replace the nut. In doing this the enlargement 9, by reason of its angularly-arranged sides corresponding with those of the depression 2 and fitting in the latter, holds the head-piece 3 and the tool 8 rigidly in adjusted position.
In case it is desired to use the tool on smaller angles the same can be done by adjusting the head-piece relatively to the post 1 at an intermediate point.
Having now described my invention, what I I 0 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a tool-post proper, which is adapted to be rigidly secured in a slot or other machine and to have a reciprocating motion imparted to it, the said post being longitudinally bored and provided with a polygonal depression at its lower end, of a head-piece having a spindle passing through said post provided with threads upon its upper end, a nut engaging said threads, a polygonal enlargement at the lower end thereof and means for securing the tool in the headpiece, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a tool-postproper, which is adapted to be rigidly secured in a slot or other machine and to have a reciproeating motion imparted to it, the said post bein g longitudinally bored and provided with a polygonal depression at its lower end, of a head-piece formed with a shoulder which is adapted to bear against the lower end of said post and having a spindle passing through said post provided with threads upon its upper end, a nut engaging said threads, a polygonal enlargement at the lower end thereof and means for securing the tool in the head piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a tool-post proper, which is adapted to be rigidly secured in a slot or other machine and to have a reciprocatin g motion imparted to it, the saidpost be
