SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,086, dated February 2, 1897.

Application filed March 11, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN F. BLASAUF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Turning the Leaves of Music; and I hereby declare the following specification and drawings therewith to be a full, true, and exact description of my improvements.

Myinvention relates to devices for turning the leaves of music by a performer in such manner as to not interrupt the playing; and it consists in a series of swinging levers provided with springs, clamps, or clips to grasp the leaves or sheets, operated by sliding bars in such manner as to turn the interior leaves one at a time or all at once in either direction, such bars being so arranged as to exert a constant or nearly constant turning strain in all positions of the swinging clamps; also, in various features of construction that will be more fully pointed out in connection with the drawings and in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved music-turning devices. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is another front view with sheets of music mounted thereon, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial plan View showing the turning mechanism as arranged in the preceding figures.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts throughout.

The back or main member A is provided with two forward-projecting ledges B 13 and downward-proj ectin g apron C, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.

Attached to the back member A is a vertical standard D, composed of a fixed part E and a movable part E the latter arranged to slide upward diagonally, as indicated by the dotted lines a a and e a, pin F being provided to move the member E The fixed part E is provided with lugs which take into slots formed in the movable member E (shown by dotted lines,) said grooves being undercut to receive the enlarged ends of the lugs. Near the ends of the device I provide two fixed clamps G G in which the covers or outer leaves of the music H are fastened, the intervening leaves H being passed into the movable or swinging clamps I.

The swinging or turning clamps I are made sufficient in number to provide one each for the interior leaves of ordinary music, three being shown in the present drawings. These swinging clamps I are, like the fixed ones G G composed of a stiif and flexible leaf or jaw in the common manner of paper-clips and are set vertically on the swinging bars J, pivoted at K, as seen in Fig. 4, and are moved or swung from right to left by means of the bars L, of which there is one for each of the swinging bars J and clamps I. In Fig. at one set of these elements is shown, so as to render their description more clear.

The clips G, G and I are composed of two parts or leaves of unequal length, the front or bending member being shorter than the rear ones, as shown at G G in Fig. 1. This enables the leaves to be more conveniently inserted, the back member of the clip forming a guide for the leaves until they enter the clip.

The sliding bars L, three in number, are provided with bent extensions M, that are bent down over the apron G into an indented recess behind the slotted plate N. In these extensions M and passing through the slots m are the knobs n and pins 0, (seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3,) by means of which the bars L are slid to the right or left, a fixed stud or pin 0 being provided, so as to be grasped at the same time with the other pins 0 and facilitate the moving of the latter.

It will be seen that by placing the thumb on the pin 0 and the fingers on any of the other pins 0 the movement of the latter is performed by the grasping action of the hand and with no effort of the performers arm.

Referring to Fig. 4, the bars L are made with a curved slot to slide on the pin K and with a pin Q, that slides in the slot S in the swinging lever J, the extreme positions of the bar L each way being shown by the dotted lines at R R. This forms an important part of my invention, because the movement of the bar L, by reason of the curved slot 1, causes an equal turning strain on the bar I at all points of the are in which it moves. It the bars L were directly attached to the swinging bars or levers I, then the turning force on the latter would be unequal and insutlieient at the two extremes, right and left; but the curve moved through by the pin (1 has an equal radius from the pin K at all points.

In mounting the music the outer leaves or covers 11 are inserted in the clamps G G", and the inner leaves ll are inserted in the swingingelamps l, as seeninlig. 2). Then the performer can by moving the pins 0 0 0 to the right or lelt (plickly turn the leaves ll z'lecordingly, either one at a time or all together, as one or more of the pins 0 are grasped.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, 1 claim 1.
