To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, DAVID O.PHILLIPs and JOSEPH M. MCCOWN, citizens of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Locks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks for stovepipes;

and it has for its object the production of simple and efficient means whereby a stovepipe may be quickly and securely united to a pipe-thimble or the like, and which, when desired, can be q uicklyand easily disengaged therefrom.

In carrying out our invention we secure two relatively adjustable arms or members to the end of a stovepipe, one of said arms or members being provided with a flange or shoulder designed to bear against the outer edge of the thimble. The other member is provided with a sleeve in which is loosely mounted a rod or member adapted to slip behind the inner edge of the pipe-thimble and engage the same. I

The invention will hereinafter be fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isv a view in perspective illustrating our improved lock in engagement with a pipe-thimble, the latter being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lock out of engagement. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view of the arms or members detached.

Referring to the drawings, A designates our improved lock, which is made of two arms or members a a, each having a slot a a the slot 0 being adapted'to register with a slot a in the stovepipe B. The members a a are secured to pipe 13 by means of a threaded bolt 1), passed through a hole I) in member a and a coincident hole in pipe 13. The end of said bolt is then passed through the slot a of member a and secured in position by a suitable nut W. The member a is provided with a flange or shoulder b? at its inner end, the same being designed to bear against the outer edge of the pipe-thimble 0, whereby the pipe 17 B is prevented from further insertion.

D is a sleeve or enlarged portion formed integral with member a and provided with a central bore 01, in which is loosely secured a rod or looking member d, the same being free to slide back and forth in said bore, heads or flanges d at each end thereof preventing the same from dropping out. Lateral movement of the parts is prevented by a lugd formed on the inner end of arm or member a and projected through slots a and a said lug also serving to additionally limit the outward movement of said arm.

The operation of our i mproved lock is as follows: The arm a is first adjusted according to the Width of the pipe-thimble and then held securely in placeby nut 12 The pipe is then inserted in the thimble in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the same being pushed in until flange or shoulder 17 engages the outer edge of said thimble. In this position the locking member 61' hangs diametrically across the outer end of the pipe. After the pipe has been inserted as above set forth the same is turned until the lockin g member assumes the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and drops down behind the edge of the thimble 0, whereby said pipe will be securely held as against removal.

From what has been said it will be seen that we have produced a simple and efiicient stovepipe-lock which is positive in operation, and one which is easily applicable to any stovepipe now in general use.

\Ve claim as our invention 1. The herein-described improved lock for stovepipes, comprising two relatively-adjustable arms or members, and a transverse rod or locking member loosely mounted in one of said adjustable arms or members, as set forth.

2. The herein-described improved lock for stovepipes, comprising two relatively-adjustable arms or members, one of which is provided with a hole or opening,and a rod or looking member loosely mounted in said hole or opening, as set forth.

3. The herein-described improved lock for stovepipes, comprising two relatively-adj ustable arms or members, a sleeve formed on one of said arms or members, and a locking member loosely mounted in said sleeve, substantially as set forth.

4:. The herein-described improved lock for stovepipes, comprising two relatively-adj ustable arms or members, a flange or shoulder formed on the inner end of one of said arms or members, a sleeve formed on the outer end of the other one of said arms or members, and a locking member loosely mounted in said sleeve, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with a stovepipe, of a slotted arm or member liavinga locking member loosely mounted in one end thereof and at right angles thereto, a second arm or member, and a securing rod or bolt passed through coincident holes in said pipe and said latter arm or member and through the slot of said former arm or member, said locking member being designed to automatically lock said stovepipe when the latter has been adjusted to its position, substantially as set forth.

(5. The combination with a stovepipe, of a slotted arm or member, a sleeve formed on one end thereof, a second arm or member, a securing rod or bolt passed through coincident holes in said pipe and said latter arm or member, and projected through the slot of said former member, and a rod or looking member carried by said sleeve and provided with heads or flanges on its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. The combination with a slotted stovepipe, of an adjustable arm or member, a second arm or member having a slot therein co 1 incident with the slot in said pipe, a locking member loosely carried by said former arm or member, and a lug also formed on said adjustable arm or member and projected through said slots, said lug serving to prevent lateral movement of the parts with relation to each other, as and for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination with a slotted stovepipe, of an adjustable arm or member, a second arm or member having a slot therein coincident with the slot in said pipe, a shoulder also formed on said arm or member, a looking member loosely carried by said former arm or member, and a lug also formed on said adjustable arm or member and projected through said slots, said lug serving to prevent lateral movement of the parts with relation to each other, as and for the purpose set forth.

9. The combination with a slotted stovepipe, of an adjustable arm or member, a second arm or member having a slot therein 00- incident with the slot in said pipe, a shoulder also formed on said arm or member, a sleeve formed integral with one end of said former arm or member, a lug also formed on the otherend of the same arm or member and projected through said slots, and a locking member carried by said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
