GATE-LATCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,517, dated January 5, 1897. Application filed A ril 24:, 1896. Serial No. 5 88,899. (No model.)

'1'0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyler, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to gate-latches; and it consists in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.

My invention is described as follows:

A is the gate-post.

B is the latch-post.

O is a hinged beam.

D is the latch-beam, and E are the slats and braces.

In the latch-beamD is secured a latch-pin d, and to the latch-post B is pivot-ed a latch 6. Through the latch-post B runs a hollow cylinder c, which is rigidly secured in place, and through this hollow cylinder works a rod 6*, to the front end of which is rigidly secured the latch c, said rod being rigidly secured in the perforation e of said latch.

To the outer end of the rod 6 is rigidly secured an arm e, to the free end of which is secured a weight a. with inclines c and a recess 6 and just below the said latch and secured in the face of the post B are pins a These pins are intended as stops to keep the latch from turning too far.

The operation of the gate is so apparent that I deem it unnecessary to describe the operation.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a gate, of the beam D, provided with the latch-pin d; perforated post B; rod 6 working in said post; arm 6 secured on the outer edge of rod 6 latch 6, having the inclines e and recess 6 rigidly secured to the inner end of the rod 6 stoppins 6 secured in the face of the post B, substantiall y as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
