UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL FRANCIS OOLLIS, OF MARFA, TEXAS.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,394, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed July 18, 1896.
Be it known that I, MIOHAEL'FRANCIS Con Us, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marfa, in the county of Presidio and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found.
This invention relates to puzzles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and the solution of which is difficult, but may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompa nying drawing forms a part, said drawing bein g a plan view of my improved puzzle device.
In the practice of my invention I provide an angular box or casing 5, which is preferably square in form, and which consists of a bottom 6 and side walls 7, and said bottom and said side walls may be composed of any desired material.
Adjacent to each corner of the box or casing are three circular or segmental Walls 8, 9, and
10, which are arranged at equal distances apart, and the first or corner wall Sis provided centrally with a passage or opening 11, while similar passages or openings 12 are formed at each end of the second wall or flange 9, and a central passage or opening 13 is formed in the outer wall or flange 10, I also provide eight balls or spherical bodies 14, four of which are colored or otherwise distinguished from the others,a-nd in practice four of the balls of similar color are placed in the corner chambers formed by the segmental walls or flanges 8, and the other four are placed in the central portion of the box or casing, and the solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating the box Serial No. 599,611. (No model.)
or casing soas to change the position of the balls or bodies 14, or so that those located in the corner chambers will be in the central portion of the box or casing,whi1e those in the central portion of the box or casing will be in the corner chambers.
It will be seen that the openings or passages 11, 12, and 13 in the walls or flanges 8, 9, and 10 are large enough to admit of the free passage of the balls or bodies 14, and this solution may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device, it being understood that the balls or bodies 14 must not be touched by the fingers or by any instrument or tool, the solution being accomplished by simply agitating or otherwise manipulating the box or casing.
The walls or flanges 8, 9, and 10 may be composed of any desired material, such as pasteboard or metal, or they may be composed of headless pins or nails driven into the bottom of the box or casing, and this form of construction is shown in the drawing.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A puzzle, substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a rectangular box or casing, having formed therein adjacent to the corners thereof three segmental walls 8, 9 and 10 arranged at equal distances apart, said walls having passages or openings formed therein, and eight balls difierently colored, four of which are adapted to be placed in the corner chambers, said puzzle being adapted to be manipulated so as to change the position of the balls in the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of July, 1896.
MICHAEL FRANCIS COLLIS.
