Be it known that we, SILAS J. FRIEND and CHARLES P. BROWN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Atwater, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to holdbacks forbuggies and other similar vehicles, and its obof the same which can be readily applied to and removed from the shafts of a buggy and adjusted thereon as desired and which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holdback, showing the same applied to a buggy-shaft. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the shaft being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan View showing a modified construction of fastener before being bent to receive the loops with which the belly-band and breeching-straps are connected. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the fastener complete.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a leather band adapted to be passed around the shafts of a buggy or other similar vehicle and having secured thereto a leather strap 2, which is doubled over upon itself and at the bend or doubled portion is connected to a metal loop 3 to receive the breeching-strap. The ends of this strap are secured to. the band 1 by rivets 4. The upper end of this doubled strap is slotted at 5 to receive a metal loop 6, through which the belly-band of the harness passes and which is held in place by a metal plate 7, which is secured to said strap and band by rivets 8.

The numeral 12 designates a stop consisting of a leather band or strap 13, having its ends bent outward, forming lugs 14, with registering apertures therein, through which passes a screw-bolt 15, provided with a nut 16, by which the stop is firmly secured to the shaft in rear of the holdback, so as to hold the latter against backward movement or the pull of the breeching-strap.

In Fig. 3 we have shown a modified construction of fastening for securing the bellyband and breeching-straps to the band 1, the same illustrating the blank as it appears before being bent into shape. Fig. 4 is another plan view of the same, showing the loops secured thereto. This fastener consists of a metal plate 16, bent over upon itself, as seen in Fig. 4, forming a loop 18, with which the breeching-loop 3 is connected. The upper portion of this plate 16 is formed with a slot 19 and with a tongue 20 at one side, provided with a bend or. groove 21, intermediate its ends. (See Fig. 3.) This tongue is bent over upon said plate and the belly-band loop 6 engages with the bend or groove 21. (See Fig. 4.) The fastener is secured to band 1 by rivets passing through holes 23 in the plate 16 and tongue 20, which also hold the tongue and the bent portions of the plate together.

There are two of these holdbacks and stops employed for each pair of shafts, as usual, and they are removable, so that they can be taken off and applied to other shafts readily and with ease, as there are no bolts passing through and into the shafts.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is- 1. The combination with the shafts of a buggy or other vehicle, of the holdback consisting of the leather band, the lugs and the screw-bolts, the fastener consisting of the strip bent over upon itself forming a loop to receive a breeching-strap loop, and the upper portion of said fastener formed with a slot, the belly-band loop seated in said slot, the metal plate secured to said fastener for holding the same in place, and the removable and adjustable stop located to the rear of the holdback, substantially as described.
