BAIT-BUCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,049, dated December 29, 1896. Application lecl July 1,1896. Serial No. 597,761. (No model.)

To all whom t may concer/vc:

Be it known that I, Lnwis B. TEIGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Powhatan Point, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bait-Buckets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to bait-buckets.

My object is to provide a more simple and cheap bait-bucket of improved construction which will be adapted lo hold several varieties of bait. Y

A further object is to provide a bait-bucket A of such novel construction that bait kept therein can be kept alive for an indefinite length of time without the necessity of frequently changing the water within the bucket.

Having these objects in view, my invention consists of a bait-bucket of novel and improved construction which is provided with a series of compartments having improved covers, so that diiferent varieties of bait can be carried at one time.

The invention still further consists of the combination,with a bucket of novel construction, of a pump which is adapted to act upon the water Within the bucket in such a manner that the water is kept in circulation and exposed to the air, so that it is revivitied, whereby bait can -be kept for an indeiinite period of time.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bait-bucket; Fig.` 2, a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 a cross-section.

A designates my improved baitbucket, which can be constructed of any preferred material and made in the shape and size most desirable to suit the requirements of the occasion. In the present instance the bucket is represented as being of elongated shape.

B designates a bail provided with a suitable handle and which is pivotally connected to the bucket in a well-known manner, so that the latter can be carried about easily. At one cnd of the bucket and somewhat above the middle point of its height there is located a supplemental bottom C, which is of slightly less length than one-half the bucket. This bottom is provided with perforations ll. The front of the bottom just described is bent upwardly to form a transversely-extending partition 2, while 3 designates a longitudinally-extending partition which divides the supplemental bottom and extends from partition 1 to the end of the bucket.

4 and 5 designate springcatches which have their lower ends fastened to the sides of the bucket about midway the length of the two upper compartments provided bythe two partitions and supplemental bottom. Connected to the sides of the bucket immediately behind the spring-catches are two ledges 6 and 7.

D and E designate two covers which are hinged to the longtudiually-extending partitions and are provided with perforations 8. Each coveris also provided with a catch-opening 9, through which the head of the catch is y adapted to lock. connected to each of these covers. covers are of such size and shape that they will tightly iit down and close the two compartments and when closed they rest on the ledges heretofore described.v The catches lock them securely in position, so that the varieties of bait which may be located in the different compartments will be properly held therein.

F designates a cross-piece which is provided with perforations 11. This cross-piece extends across the upper part of the bucket immediately next to the transversely-extending partition. i

G designates a pump-barrel which opens out through the cross-piece and extends down to the bottom of the bucket, but its lower end is held raised from the latter by suitable legs 12. A pin 13 extends across this barrel near the bottom end thereof, and a ball-valve 14 is located between this pin and the bottom of the bucket, so that it will be adapted for slight movement, but which will be sufficient to allow entrance of the water into the pumpbarrel.

H designates a pump-piston which is provided with an annular flange 15 at its lower end and is adapted to snugly fit Within the pump-barrel. A ball-valve 6 is located in this piston and is adapted to seat itself on the annular flange just described,

The end of this piston-rod extends down into the piston and sufficiently near the ball-valve therein, so that thelatter will be allowed but slight movement.

The numerals I9 designate braces which connect the piston-rod to the upperend of the piston.

I designates a main cover which is provided with perforations 2l and is hinged to the crosspiece. This cover is also provided with a catch-opening 22 and has a button 23, which can be grasped by the lingers.

The numeral 2t designates a springcateh which has its lower end connected to the end of the bucket and which is adapted to lock through the catch-opening in the cover. A ledge 25 is connected to the end of the bucket, and on this ledge the main cover rests when it is locked down in position.

It will be observed that in my improved bait-bucket there are three separate baitcompartments, the main one of which occupies the greater portion of the bucket and is designated by letter M, while two supplemental compartments are represented by N and O. Provision is thus made so that different kinds of bait can be carried in one bucket. It is obvious that the bucket can be so constructed that as many compartments could be provided as desirable. lVith my improved bucket provision is made so that the bait can be kept alive for an indefinite period of time. This is accomplished by operatingthe pump when necessary, so that the water within the pump will be pumped up onto the covers, whereupon it will drain therethrough and back into the bucket. By thus exposing the water to the air it is reviviiied, as it Were, so that the baitis refreshed and can be kept alive for a long time. The necessity of refilling the bucket with fresh water is thus satisfactorily obviated, and the pump can be manipulated while the bucket is being carried along.

It is. to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described7 but consider that I am entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of my invention.

IIaving now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a bait-bucket, the combination with engagement with the spring-catches so as to close the compartments.

In a bait-bucket, the combination with the bucket proper, of a supplemental perforated hinged bottom located at one end of the bucket, a partition acting in connection with said bottom to provide a series of eompartments, perforated hinged covers for said compartments, spring-catches adapted to lock said covers, an additional or main perforated hinged cover adapted to close the remainder of the bucket, and a spring-catch which locks with said cover.

et. In a bait-bucket, the combination with a perforated cover, of a pump adapted for pumping the water in the bucket up to the top of the cover so that it can again drain down through the latter.

5. In a bait-bucket,the combination with a series of bait-compartments located in the upper part of the bucket, of a pump adapted to pump the water up to the compartments, so that it can again drain down through the latter. V

In a bait-bucket, the combination with a series of upper compartments located at one end of the bucket and provided with perforated bottoms, of covers for said compartments, a main perforated cover adapted to close the remainder of the bucket, and a pump for lifting the water up through the bottom of the bucket to the main cover and the compartments, so that it may again drain down through the latter.
