SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,954, dated December 29, 1896. Application filed June 8,1896. Serial No. 594,642. (No model.)

Beit known that we,LEMAN ARNOLD, of Northville, county of Fulton, and MORRIS LARY, of Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Thimbles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in stovepipe-thimbles.

Our object is to produce a stovepipe-thimble adapted to be easily and readily attached or detached from the opening in the chimney; and to that end our invention consists in the several new and novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. 4

It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l shows avertical section of a chimney through the opening, showing a thimble therein as the same appears when in use. Fig. 2 shows a front end view of the thirn ble and locking device detached. Fig. 3 shows a view of the thimble proper, the locking device being removed, and showing the same enlarged in dotted lines.

A is a chimney provided with an ordinary opening d. B is the thimble, constructed cylindrical in form, as shown, the edges b and b lapping each other, as shown in Fig. 2, the side lapping edges being held together by a thumb-screw c. The outer `lap b of the thimble is provided with a transverse slotway d', (shown in Fig. 1,) for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the annular size of the thimble, as may be desired. When the desired size is reached, the thumb-screw is turned until the laps are securely held t0- gether. The thimble is ,also provided with a locking device comprising standards conto form tips, the whole thus bent forming the spring-brackets fand assuming the position shown in the drawings.

When it is desired to remove the thimble, the hand is inserted through the thimble and grips the inner ends of the brackets f and forces them to the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. l, when the thimble may he readily withdrawn. v v

The stovepipelis inserted into the thimble and may be secured thereto by pins, screws, or in any ordinary or well-known manner.

Having described our invention, what we desi re to secure by Letters Patent is A stovepipe-thimble comprising a cylinder and a locking device secured thereto, said locking device comprising standards formed from a piece of wire" bent upon itself at two points and secured to the cylinder and the out ends of said wire bent outwardly and then inwardly at an angle, for the purpose of forminga shoulder to engage with the inner face of the chimney and the extreme ends of the said wire being bent to allow the finger and thumb of the hand to readily grasp them for the purpose of compressing the shoulders when it is desired to withdraw the thimble from the chimney.
