RICHARD MURDOGH, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEAMS OF LETTER-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,364, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MURDoen, of
the city and county of Baltimore, and State.
of Maryland, have made new and useful linprovements in Letter-Weighing Scales; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made part of this specification, and in which may improvement is represented by a perspective view.
My invention consists in the improved mode of making the beam of the scale, to wit, ou-the top, so as to make the figures more readily seen and more conveniently read.
In the drawings, Ais the base; B, the standard; O, the tray, and D the beam,whose notches are on the upper side, as usual, being engaged by a projection in the slot of the pea or Weight.
It is usual to put the figures denoting weight upon the fiat and nearly vertical sides of the beam; but in my letterscales the top of the beam is fiat and the figures are placed thereon, which is much more convenient in every respect to the person Weighing the letters.
WVhen in use the letter-scales are usually upon a table a considerable distance below the level of the eyes, and the figures upon the upper side are more conveniently placed and legible than When on the side, as is evident to one who is accustomed to the use of such apparatus.

The letter-scales provided with a graduated beam having the figures upon its fiat upper side, substantially as described.
