UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR MARIOHAL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOUTHIYARK FOUNDRY AND MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,607, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed May 27, 1893. Serial No. 475,689. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern: shown, consist of two cylindrical portions Be it known that I, ARTHUR MARIGHAL, a E2 E2, seated in cylindrical cavities at each subject of the King of Belgium, residing in end of the slot C and connected by a seg- Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, ment-like bar E', which constitutes the valve 55 5 in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented proper.
a certain new and useful Improvement in E3 indicates a valve-rod extending out from Valves, of which the following is a true and one end of the valve E and, as shown in Fig. exact description, reference being had to the 3, extending through a stuffing-box K, situdrawings which accompany this and which ated in a cast flange J. 6o 1o form a part of the specification. The form of the valve-seat D should be Hy invention relates to a novel construcsuch as will provide a cavity of substantially tion of valves especially, although not exthe same size as the segmental bar E of the clusively, adapted for use with blowing-envalve on one side of the slot C, so that when gines or compressors. the valve is turned to open the slot C the 15 Rotary oroscillatory valveshave heretofore passage through said slot will be uninterbeen extensively used and in some cases aprupted and of uniform section. It is also adplied to blowing-engines. 'Such valves have visable, especially when my valve is used for well-recognized merits, but especially in cases a blowing-engine or pump, that the valve where large volumes of fluid are passed when closed should seat itself on the side of 7o zo through them they are subject to certain the valve-seat through which the fluid enters well-recognized drawbacks. the cavity of the valve-seat. Thus in the The object of my invention is to provide a upper part of Fig. l it will be observed that valve system which will have the good feathe valve when closed seats itself on the uptures of the rotary valves heretofore used and per part of the valve-cavity, as shown in the 25 in addition additional meritorious features drawings, or outer part relatively to the cyldue to my novel construction, the nature of inder. As a result of this when air is comwhich will be best understood as described in pressed in the cylinder the valve is presseflav connection with the drawings, in whichtightly to its seat, while when the pressure /PPW Figure lis a longitudinal section through in the cylinder falls below the atmosphere 8o 3o the cylinder or tub of a blowing-engine, the there is a tendency to lift the valve from its upper part being taken through an admisseat. On the same principle, also, the valve sion-valve and the lower part througha delivshown at the lower part of Fig. l, which is ery-valve. Fig. 2 shows, on an enlarged scale, the delivery-valve, is made to seat itself on a portion of the admission-valve, the secthe inner portion of the valve-seat, or upper 3 5 tion being the same as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a portion, as shown in the drawings, owing to .transverse section through the valve-seat on which construction the pressure of comthe line o; of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective pressed ai; in the receiver indicated at L will view illustrating the detachable connection tend to keep the valve seated, and the presbetween each valve and the valve-actuating sure of air within the cylinder when it eX- 9o 4o mechanism. ceeds the pressure in the receiver will tend A indicates the blowing cylinder or tub of to lift it and make it easier to turn. the engine; B B, the cylinder-heads. The series of cylindrical valves making C C C, &c.,indicate a series of slotted openup each admission and delivery valve are ings or ports extending through the cylindercoupled with some reciprocating mechanism 45 head and forming a grid-valve opening. which will cause them 'simultaneously' to DDD, &c.,indicate cylindrical valve-seats open and close the respective slots which formed in the head B and situated one in each they control, and the connection with such of the slotted openings C. reciprocating mechanism should in each case E E E, duc., indicate rotary or oscillatory be independent and separable. In the drawroo 5o valves, one of which is situated in each cyings I have shown each valve of the series as lindrical valve -seat D. These valves, as connected by means of independent leverarms F F, &c., with a transversely-extending bar G, which in turn is connected by a connecting-rod H With the arm I of a lever I I', pivoted at I2, and to which motion can be imparted at proper intervals by any desired mechanism.
It is desirable that each rotary valve should be so connected with the valve actuating` mechanism that it can be disconnected at will, not only to permit the :ready repair of each valve, but also so that in case of injury it can be left in a closed position while the other valves of the series are kept in operation. As shown, the lever-arms F are each detachable from the valve-rods E3 and the pins g of the bar G. Thus, as shown in Fig. et, the lever F has a hole f at one end, which slips over the end of rod E3, While ahole f at its other end slips over the pin g. The lever is rmly secured to rod E3 in any convenient Way, as by a set-screw J, While of course it is free to turn on pin g.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with a cylinder, a head B having formed in it a series of slots C forming a gridvalve opening, and a series of valve-seats D, one situated in each slot C, a
series of rotary valves E secured in the respective seats D, and means for simultaneously operating said valves to open or close the slots.
2. In combination with a cylinder, a head B having formed in it a series of slots C forming a grid-valve opening, and a series of valve-seats D, one situated in each slot C, a series of rotary valves E secured in the respective seats D, reciprocating mechanism, as bar G, for simultaneously actuating said valves, and a series of independent detachable devices as rods F for connecting the separate valves with the said reciprocating mechanism.
3. In a blowing-engine or compressor, the combination with a cylinder-headv B having a series of slots G forming a grid-valve opening, and a series of valve-seats C one situated in each slot, a series of rotary valves E one secured in each slot and arranged to seat themselves across the slot on that side of the seat through which the air or gas enters the cavity of the valve-seat, and means for simultaneously actuating said valves.
