UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. SOURS, OF ANOKA, MINNESOTA.
NIPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent N o. 573,548, dated December 22, 1896. Application led August 13, 1896. Serial No. 602,615. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN L. SoURs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anoka, in the county of Anoka and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nippers, the object of the same being to provide a device of this character which is strong and durable and extremely effective in operation by reason of the fact that the strain is equally applied to all the parts and less power is required to operate the cutting-jaws than is necessary upon the nippers now in common use.
The invention consists of a casing made up of two parallel plates, a pair of cutting-jaws pivotally mounted therein having circular rear ends provided with a series of teeth which mesh one with the other, and a pair of operating-levers fulcrumed between said plates, having circular heads provided with teeth which mesh with one another and also with the teeth on the respective cutting-jaws.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved nippers. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same with one of the plates removed. Fig. 3 is an edge view.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My improved device is made up of a casing consisting of a pair of parallel plates 1 1, between which are pivoted two cutting-jaws 2 3, the same having circular rear ends 4. 5, each of which has a series of teeth 6 7 upon it, which mesh one with the other. The said jaws are pivotally mounted upon suitable rods or shafts 8 8, connecting the plates 1 1. Fulcrumed upon suitable rods or shafts 9 9, between the plates 1 1, are operating-levers 1011, each having a circular or segmental head provided with teeth 12 13, respectively, thereon. The teeth 12 and 13 mesh with each other and with the teeth 6 7, respectively, on the ends of the cutting- jaws 2 and 3.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by throwing open the outer ends of the operating-levers 10 11 the cutting-jaws 2 3 will also be thrown open, and that a reverse operation of said levers will cause the said jaws to be drawn together, as shown in Fig. 2. The operation of one of the levers 10 11 will be sufficient to operate the jaws, by reason of the fact that the teeth on said levers mesh with each other and with the teeth 6 7 on said cutting-jaws. The power exerted upon the levers is therefore transmitted equally throughout all the parts of the device, and undue strain upon any one part is thereby prevented.
IIa-ving now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Nippers, made up of a pair of pivotallymounted cutting-jaws having circular or segmental rear ends formed with teeth which mesh one with the other, and a pair of operating-levers having circular or segmental upper ends which mesh with each other and with the teeth on the rear ends of the respective cutting-jaws.
2. Nippers, made up of a pair of parallel plates, a pair of cutting-jaws pivotallymounted between said plates having circular or segmental rear ends which mesh one with the other, and a pair of operating -levers fulcrunied between said plates and having segmental or circular upper ends provided with teeth which mesh with each other and with the teeth on the rear ends of the respective cutting-jaws.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN L. SOURS.
