Beit known that I, ROBERT EDMUND THUR- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America,

and a resident of Victoria, in the county of Victoria and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements j The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-` lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which I have shown my improvement applied to the neck of a bottle, and in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck of a bottle, showing my improvement connected therewith; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Figfl.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle or other vessel having a neck 5, which is adapted to be closed by an ordinary cork, plug, or stopper 6, and which is provided at its upper end with an outwardlydirected shoulder or projection 7, which is preferably of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being oblong or slightly elliptical, and above said annular shoulder or projection the neck is also oblong in cross-section, as shown at 8 in Fig. 3, and the walls thereof are inwardly and upwardly inclined, and above this central portion 8 is an annular shoulder or projection 9, above which the neck of the bottle is tubular and cylindrical in form, as shown at 10, and at the upper end of the part 10 is another annular shoulder or bead 11.

The narrowr sides 12 of the central portion 8 of the bottle are separated from the main part of the neck by vertical and transverse grooves 13, which are preferably formed on both the inner and the outer sides thereof, whereby the blocks or sides 12 may be broken out without breaking off the neck of the bottle, and I also provide a wedge-14, which is triangular in form, and the base of which is adapted to rest on the cork or stopper G, and the opposite side corners of which are provided with annular notches or recesses 15, and it will be observed that the inner side walls of the neck just above the main part 5 thereof are much wider than the inner walls of the part 5 or much greater in diameter. I also provide a disk or plate 16, which is preferably composed of metal and provided with hangers 17, in the lower end of which is mounted a rod or bar 18, and suspended from said rod or bar are two clamps or jaws 19, said clamps or jaws being free to swing on said rod or bar and being provided at their lower ends with inwardly-directed heads 20, whichare adapted to engage with'the shoulders or projections 21, formed by the notches or recesses 15 in the lower sides of thewedge 14;

- Secured to the upper side of the plate or disk 16 in any desired manner is a strong spiral spring 22, which is provided at its upper end with a ring or head 23, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

The bottle or vessel is first filled with the desired contents, after which the cork or stopper 6 is forced into the position shown in Fig. 1, and the lower part of the neck 5 is preferably slightly smaller in diameter than the upper part 10, so as to permit the cork or stopper to pass through said upper part freely, and the sides of the central portion at S are provided with vertical grooves 24, which are circular in cross-section and which serve as guides for the cork or stopper as it is passed into position. After the cork or stopper has been suitably placed the wedge 14 is inserted into and rests upon said cork or stopper, and the disk or plate 16, with its attachments, is then passed into the neck, and the clamps or jaws 6 or the head 2O thereof slide downwardly over the sides of the wedge 11i and the heads 2O engage with the shouln ders or projections 21. In this position of the parts the disk or plate 16, with its :attachments, cannot be removed from` the neck without pulling out the wedge 14C, and in an attempt to do this the jaws or clamps 1f) will press upon the sides 12 and one or both of the said sides will be broken out, and this IOO breaking out of one or both of said sides will be proof that the vessel has been once filled and emptied.

In pulling` out the wedge 1i if one of the sides 12 should be broken out the clamp or jaw 19 adjacent thereto may be so manipulated as to enable the operator to remove the wedge 14, and the bottle may be emptied of vits contents through the aperture formed by breaking out the side, as will be readily understood.

It will also be apparent that the upper end of the neck of the bottle or vessel may be closed or sealed in any desired manner, and I also contemplate placing upon the sides 12 or one of them a trade-mark orvthe name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the bottle, and said bottle may also have a label placed thereon describing the construction thereof and the object of such construction.

Any suitable device may besubstituted for the spring 22, and in practice I prefer to make the plate or disk 16 of such size as to enable it to move freely in the upper part 10 of the neck, and it will thus be seen that 4I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation, and which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle or vessel to which the invention is applied.

Having fully described my invention, I claim-as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-l 1. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, which is adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper said .neck being provided with an upwardly-directed extension, which is oblong in cross-section, and the base of which is larger than the upper part of the neck, said extension being provided with sides which are adapted to be broken out, and a wedgeshaped device which is adapted to be placed upon the cork or stopper, and provided with shoulders or projections at its lower end, and an attachment which is adapted to be inserted into the neck and to be withdrawn therefrom, said attachment being provided with pivotally-suspended jaws or clamps, which are adapted to engage with the shoulders or projections on the wedgeshaped device, and to bear upon the sides which are adapted to be broken out when the lattachment is withdrawn from the neck, substantially as shown and described.

2. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, which is adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper, said neck being provided with a central enlarged portion which is oblong in cross-section, and the sides of which are inclined upwardly, and inwardly, and adapted to be broken out, a wedge-shaped device which is adapted to be inserted into said neck, and to rest upon said cork or stopper, and an attachment which is adapted to be inserted into the neck above said wedge-shaped device, and which is provided with jaws or clamps suspended, therefrom, and the lower ends of which are adapted to enga'ge with shoulders or projections formed on said wedge, and to bear upon the inclined sides of the neck,when said attachment is withdrawn therefrom, substantially as shown and described.

A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, which is adapted to be closed bya cork or stopper, said neck being provided with a central enlarged portion, which is oblong in cross-section, and the sides of which are inclined upwardly and inwardly, and adapted to be broken out, a wedge-shaped device which is adapted to be inserted into said neck, and to rest upon said cork or stopper, and an attachment which is adapted to be inserted into the neck above said wedge-shaped device, and which is provided with jaws or clamps suspended therefrom, and the lower ends of which are adapted to 4engage with shoulders or projections formed on said wedge and to bear upon the inclined sides of the neck,when said attachment is withdrawn therefrom, said sides of the neck which are adapted to be broken ou t being separated from the main part thereof, by vertical and transverse grooves, substantially as shown and described.
