ADJUSTABLE SPINE-PROTECTING BACK-BAN D.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,396, dated December 15, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. DEADWYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Lamar, in the county of Madison and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Spine -Protecting Back-Bands and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in back-bands for harness, the object of the same being to provide such a device which shall be adjustable to fit different sizes of horses and act as a protector for the spine of the horse, which shall do away with the sawing and pulling across the backbone while turning at the end ofrows, and also do away with the usual sweat-pad, at the same time preventing scalding of the back by permitting a free passage of the air beneath said band.

The invention consists of a back-band made of two pieces of wood, each piece being curved from its upper end downwardly, outwardly, and then downwardly, and the two pieces,

when in position to be inserted on the back of the horse, unitedly forming a pointed upper end within which the spinal column of the horse is adapted to fit. The two parts are made adjustable by means of loops on the sides of their upper ends and a strap passing through said loops.

My improved back-band is preferably constructed of wood and is made up of two strips 1 1, which are curved from their upper ends downwardly, outwardly, and downwardly again, so that when the two parts are joined together they will fit snugly over the back of the horse. They are adj ustably secured in place by means of a strap 2, which passes around the upper ends of the strip 1 through guide loops or staples 3 3, as clearly shown in the drawings. By this construction my back-band is adapted to fit any size of horse to which it may be desired to apply the same.

In order that the band may fit the sides of the horse snugly, the rear inner surface of each of the strips 1 is cut away, as shown at 4, so that the rear rib of the horse may fit therein.

It will be observed that when the two parts 1 1 are joined together in the manner described a space 5 is left at the upper central portion of the back-band within which the spine of the horse is adapted to fit, thereby preventing chafing or rubbing of the backbone. On the sides of each of the strips 1 are mounted in suitable brackets 6 pulleys 7, over which the lines are adapted to pass. At points below the brackets 6 are also secured to the strips 1 hooks or guideways 8 8, through which the traces pass and are supported.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described adjustable, spineprotecting back-band, consisting of a pair of strips of wood, bent from their upper ends downwardly, outwardly and downwardly again and formed with depressions or cutaway portions on their rear inner surfaces, loops or staples on the upper ends of said strips and a strap or other fastening device passing through said loops for the purpose of adjusting the size of the band, substantially as and for the purpose described.
