CLAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 573,287, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed January 27, 1896. Serial No. 576,956. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OHARLEsD. PITTIS, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented an Improved Clamp, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to clamps, and particularly to an improved clamp for securing the ivory heads and front scrolls to the tops and fronts of piano and organ keys.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple device which will hold the ivory heads and fronts firmly in position while being glued and with this object in view my invention consists in a clamp or bracket m cmber essentially rectangular in shape, a presser or bearing plate having a ridge thereon, and a clamping-screw through one member of the clamping frame or bracket and bearing upon the presser-plate.

My invention also consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the clamp as used for holding the ivory head upon the top of key. Fig. 2 is a view showing an auxiliary clamp as used for holding the front scroll upon the front of key. Fig. 8 is a detailed view of the clamp shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a detailed View of the clamp shown in Fig. 2.

I employ two forms of clamps, which co1nprise each a clamping bracket or frame, a clamping-screw, and a presser or bearing plate. These two forms of brackets are eniployed at different times, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.

Referring now to Fig. 1, A indicates the clamping frame or bracket,essentially rectangular in shape and having the lugs or teeth Ct at one end adapted to bear against the shoulders formed by the widened part of the key, while through the opposite end of said bracket or frame is passed the presserscrew B, having a head b. The presser or bearing plate O has a transverse ridge 0 upon the top face, against which the clamping screw presses to force the same downward and rearward, the said frame being held in an inclined position, as clearly shown. The forward edge of the presser or bearing plate 0 is turned under or formed with a flange 0, which fits 1 against the forward end of the ivory head. In addition to the transverse ridge upon the top of the presser-plate I preferably provide F parallel longitudinal ridges at each end. of said transverse ridge, the purpose of which; is to strengthen the presser-plate and keep it .60 perfectly fiat under all conditions.

In Fig. 2 I have shown the auxiliary clamping bracket or frame D made in the form of an open rectangle, one member cl of which is adapted to enter a mortise d, formed in the ,6 5 bottom of the key, While through the oppo- 3 site member of said frame is passed the clampin g-screw E, which bears upon the presser or bearing plate F, said screw and plate being substantially the same as before described. The presser plate, however, is made substantially the same size and shape as the front scroll, upon which it is adapted to bear.

The manner of operating my invention is obvious from the accompanying drawings, and the detailed description of said operation is therefore unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with the rectangular frame, having teeth a upon the bottom member and a presser-screw B passing through the upper end of frame, and the plates 0 having a cross rib c and longitudinal ribs at each 8 5 side and the end flange c all arranged substantially as described.
