SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,012, dated December 15, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN THOMAS LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part there of, in which similar numerals of reference indieate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved fan attachment for sewing-machines; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a sewing-machine provided with my improvement, part of the construction being broken away to better show the location and operation of the attachment; and Fig. 2, a back view of the attachment removed.
In the drawings showing part of this specification I have shown at 5 an ordinary sewing-machine of any desired form or construction, and in the practice of my invention I provide a fan attachment therefor, which consists of a clamp 6, having two parallel jaws 7, by which the attachment is connected with the table 8 of the machine, and one of said jaws is provided with a set-screw 9, and passing through the cross-head of the attachment is another set-screw, 10. Passing vertically through the separate jaws of the clamp and adapted to slide therein is a bar 11, which is provided at its lower end with a yoke 12, in which is mounted a friction-roller 13, and secured to the clamp at one side thereof is a sleeve 1%, and the shaft of the roller 13 is provided with a head 15, and passing vertically through the sleeve 14 and the head 15 is a rod 16, on the lower end of which is a smaller friction-roller 17, which is adapted to bear upon the side of the roller 13, near the perimeter thereof, and mounted on the rod 16, above the sleeve, is a collar 18, provided with a set-screw 19, by means of which the verti cal position of the rod 16 is adjusted.
The rod 16 is provided at its upper end with a head 20, in the upper end of which is formed a socket which is adapted to receive the handle 21 of a fan 22, which may be of the ordinary palm-leaf or any desired variety.
The friction-roller 13 is much larger than the roller 17 and is adapted to bear upon and be operated by the drive-wheel 23 of the machine, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The fan attachment is connected with the table of the machine opposite the operator or at the back thereof, and the rollers 13 and 17 are composed of rubber, rubber and canvas, or similar material, or are provided with rubber perimeters, and the device is so adjusted that the roller 13 will bear upon the side of the drive-wheel The drive-wheel 23 re volves the roller 13, and the roller 13 revolves the roller 17, which operates the rod 16 and revolves the fan, and the speed of the fan will depend upon that of the rollers 13 and 17 and the size thereof.
This device is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive and may be quickly and easily attached to almost any form of sewing-machine, and the operation thereof does not interfere with the operation of the machine, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a sewing-machine or similar article, of the herein-described fan attachment, adapted to be detachably connected therewith, consisting of a clamp 6, provided with jaws, one of which is provided with a set-screw 9 for attachment to the table of the machine, said clamp being provided with another set-screw 10, a bar 11 mounted in openings formed in said jaws, and adjustably secured thereto by the last-mentioned set-screw, said bar having formed on the lower end thereof a yoke 12, a friction-roller 13 mounted in said yoke, and adapted to bear on the drive-wheel of the machine, a sleeve 14 connected with said clamp, a rod 16 mounted in said sleeve and provided upon the lower end thereof with a friction-roller 17, said rod being; also journaled' in a head my invention I have signed my name, in pres- 15 formed on said yoke 12, and a head 20 ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 13th mounted on the upper end of said rod 16, day of July, 1896. provided With a socket, and a, fan adapted to JOHN THOMAS LEE. 5 be secured on said head, and to be operated Witnesses:
