COMBINED WALKING-STICK AND UMBRELLA.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined WValking-Stick and Umbrella, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to improvements in combined walking-sticks and umbrellas, and has for its object to provide an article of this character which will be durable, inexpensive, and operative.

The device will comprise few and simple parts, which will be assembled in such a m anncr as to admit of very rapid adjustment.

The invention will be hereiuafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of my improved walkingstick and umbrella. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a folded view of the telescopical casing forming part of my device.

In the practice of my invention I provide an umbrella A. with a contracted stick or rod a and an enlarged handle a.

To the lower end of the handle a is attached a ring I). Said ring is provided with an annular groove 1), which engages with a flange c of a collar 0. This said collar is provided with an interior thread 0 which en gages with a threaded flange cl on the upper section 1 of the telescopic casing 13. This said casing comprises a series of tubular and conical sections 1, 2, 3, and at, the lower section thereof being supplied with a ferrule c, which should be composed of some hard and durable metal. The sections themselves are preferably composed of aluminium; *but they may be made of celluloid, gutta-percha, or other desirable material, and in practice they should be painted or stained to a color exactly matching the handle of the umbrella, whereby the general appearance of a cane or walking-stick is maintained when the casing is extended and secured to the umbrella, as shown in Fig. 1. v

The handle of the umbrella is further provided at its outer end with a screw-cap which can be removed and attached to the threaded flange cl of the section 1 of the telescopic casing when said casing is folded, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.

The cap f and the collar 0 should be made of some valuable metal-such as silver, for instanceand they may be ornamented by any suitable design to preserve the appearance of a cane when the device is being carried as such.

hen it is desired to use the umbrella, it is simply necessary to revolve the collar 0 until it is out of engagement with the flange (Z of the casing, when the several sections of said casing may be readily folded, as illustrated in Fig. 8, and when the cap f is adjusted it will be seen that the sections cannot become permanently separated from each other, while at the same time they form a small and compact package adapted to be easily carried in the pocket.

To insure that the umbrella will not rattle or move within its casing, the section 4: of the said casing is provided with a deep socket e, which is adapted to tightly hold the lower end of the stick or rod a of the umbrella. lVhen the casing is folded, a slight pull will readily detach said section from the stick.

The operation of attaching the casing to the handle is performed in a manner similar to that of detaching the same, with the exception that the collar 0 must be revolved in an opposite direction.

Ido not claim the construction of a combined walking-stick and umbrella broadly, as I am aware that the same has been patented and used; but I have contrived a novel construction and arrangement of parts which are better adapted for the purpose and simpler than any known to me.
