AWNING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,434, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed February 18,1896. Serial No. 579.739. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. METZGER and WILLIAM E. METZGER, of Rutland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improvement in awnings; and the object of the invention is to provide a means for hanging the awning which will be simple, durable, and. economic and whereby the hanging devices attached to the awning need not be removed from the awning when said awning is disconnected from its support, and whereby, further, the
said hanging devices will be securely and fixedly attached to said awning. A further object of the invention is to provide an awning with a device whereby when it is drawn upward the folds of the awning will not interfere with the pulley through which the draw-rope passes or with the rope itself, and to so attach such a device to the awning that it will not detract from its appearance.
Another object of the invention is to construct hangers adapted to receive the hanging devices attached to the awning, the said hangers being especially adapted for attachment to an iron rod or a rigid rod of any material adapted as a support for the awning, the hangers being'so made that they may be attached or fixed at any point 011 the rod or conveniently and expeditiously rem oved from said rod and disconnected from the hanging devices of the awning.
The invention consists inthe novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts-in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of an awning, illustrating the application of the Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the improved hangers, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the upper marginal portion of the awning and a hanging device secured at that point.
In carrying out the invention the awning A may be of any desired shape or material, and it is provided with the usual hem B at its top,
through which hem a rope or cord 10 is made to pass. The hanging devices for the awning consist of loops 11, preferably made of metal,
the extremities of the members of which are passed through the awning at the hem and around'the rope or cord 10, as shown in Fig. 4, being bent over the hem portion of the awning in such manner that they will be clamped or firmly secured thereto.
The members of the yoke are drawn together,
so that the pin will connect the two members, by means of a bolt 15, secured preferably in the member carrying the pin and passing loosely through the member having the opening 14 made therein, and the said bolt at its free end is provided with a nut 16, preferably of the wing character, as illustrated. \Vhen the nut is loosened, the yoke-body of the hanger may be passed over the hanging or supporting rod 0, and when the nut is tightened the members of the yoke-body of the hanger will be firmly clamped to the rod, the hanger thereby remaining in the position in which it was placed.
The pins 13 of the hanger are adapted to be passed through the loops or staples 11, attached to the awning, and by this means the awning is suspended from the said hangers in a convenient manner, and upon loosening the nut 16, admitting of the members of the hanger separating and thereby withdrawing the pin 13 from the opening 14, the loops or staples 11 may be readily withdrawn from the hanger with which they were connected.
A pulley 17 is provided, as is ordinary, to accommodate the draw rope or cord 18, parawning which is adjacent to the pulley 17 and 1 the pull rope or cord 18 adjacent to the pulley, as is best shown in Fig. 2. spriu g 20 usually consists of a wire of suitable resiliency, which is bent upon itself to form v a skeleton frame, being curved in an outwardly direction.
Under this construction it is obvious that when the rope or cord 18 is operated to draw the awning upward or -fold thesame the material of the awning adjacent to the pulley will be held out of engagement therewith,
and consequently the awning cannot interfere with the action of the pulley or the rope or cord 18, permitting the awning being raised with much less expenditure of strength than heretofore and to a greater height and a more compact folding.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An awning provided with an expansionspring opposite the pulley through which the draw-rope of the awning is passed, the said spring acting to hold the awning free from the said pulley, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a rod-support, of
a hanger of substantiallyyoke formation, one
member of the hanger being provided with a The said pin and the other member with an opening to receive the pin, and a device for drawing the members together, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a supporting-rod, of a hanger comprising a yoke-like body of a spring material, having a pin near one eX- tremity of one member, extending in direction of the opposite member, the said opposite member being provided with an opening to receive the said pin, a bolt secured in the pincarrying member of the hanger, loosely passed through the opposing member, and a nut located upon the free end of the said bolt, adapted for engagement with the apertured member of the yoke-body of the hanger, as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with a support, a yokeli-ke hanger provided with a pin attached to one member, and a keeper upon its opposite member, receiving the said pin, and a tension device adapted to contract the members of the hanger, or admit of the expansion of the same, of an awning, and a staple secured to the marginal portion of the said awning, through which staple'the pin of the hanger is adapted to be passed, as and for the purpose specified.
5. An awning-hanger, consisting of a yoke provided withapin projecting from one member and an opening in the other member to receive the pin, and a bolt for drawing the members of the yoke together, substantially as described. I
